teylaminh: (Cabaret - Maybe This Time)
So, I have two day trips to blog about and a meme to do. I was insanely busy at work on Tuesday and Wednesday (as a knock-on effect of having to help out West/East teams the Wednesday before [i.e. the 20th], resulting in almost falling behind in our own team's work) and didn't find time to update, and then have been too tired / disinclined to actually update whilst at home.

I also have another embroidery scan to post when I get home, as I've finally finished the insane amount of mid-brown. I started the darkest shade of green yesterday then realised I'd completely misread the colour chart and done it all the wrong colour - thankfully there wasn't too much of it, but still, a good three hours' worth of work to redo...

Anyway. I'm just taking a little break before commencing the three-tape dictation of DOOM that is sitting on my desk. Super-long entry commences... NOW!

Day Trip to Glastonbury, Saturday 23rd May )

After that was the bank holiday weekend, and as far as I can remember I don't think we did anything. Paul was working on the Monday anyway, so I doubt anything exciting happened. I was then at work for two days, before having flex and annual leave on Thursday and Friday.

(Half) Day Trip to Worcester, Thursday 28th May )

Aaaand finally, the meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] 803am...

Comment to this entry and I'll pick three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

I was given Farscape, Jonathan Creek and The X-Files by Eni... Here we go... Probably LONG )

Phew. *wipes brow*

Oh, and finally finally (honest), talking about Jonathan Creek, have some fic-like ramblings... )

Right, that's enough for one day. Normal service will be resumed shortly. *posts and runs*
teylaminh: (Photo - Sunset tree)
Last week's stress has finally begun to manifest itself - the skin around my right middle fingernail is peeling quite horrendously, and the ring finger's started to go as well. Left hand is okay so far. I might put some Sudocrem on them tonight... All of my random stress reactions take about a week to kick in; at least this time I was expecting it. I'm usually trying to remember what kicked it off. ;)

They've turned the heating off at work this morning, so I had to run out at about 10.00 to get some hot chocolate in order to warm myself up.

Weekend was quite fun. Saturday morning was slightly marred by having a headache first thing, which I attribute to not eating properly. When I have brown bread every day I do tend to feel generally healthier, and my stomach has been a bit complainy of late, too. Back to the healthy(ish) eating today.

In the afternoon we went out to Alison's birthday picnic at Cannon Hill Park. Obviously, it was lovely and sunny on the way there - we walked from Moseley having just missed the bus - until we were walking through the park, when the heavens opened. The rain kept coming, off and on, for the majority of the afternoon, and the picnic took place on the bandstand. Much amusement was had, especially when Paul and Lloyd got fed up of sitting on the floor and went to fetch a picnic table, until someone said that the bandstand wouldn't withstand the weight, at which point they abandoned the table halfway up the slope... My description of this is done better justice by the photographs, which are on Facebook, here.

Paul and I left after an hour or so because we were cold from the walk in the rain. At the point we decided to leave it was chucking it down again so we held on for a bit and then - obviously - when we walked back to Moseley (uphill, gah), the sun had come out again. Typical. :P

In the evening we rented Zack and Miri Make a Porno from cable, which was actually surprisingly good...

Sunday was fairly sedate. We were going to go out if the weather was okay, but obviously it wasn't, so we stayed in. Watched the second Jonathan Creek Christmas special, "Satan's Chimney". I appear to be finding Carla a lot less irritating than the first time around, which is somewhat worrying. I now suddenly realise I completely missed the postcard scene... am now wondering if it was in a different episode entirely, though I'm fairly sure it's in "SC", because I mentioned it in my post-episode tag... Hm. Might need to re-watch and find it.

Some random thoughts )

Other than that, I did some more embroidery and watched The Unloved, part of C4's "Find Me A Family" season. Also made a spaghetti bolognese last night with some pancetta in it that we picked up from Sainsbury's, and mmmmmm nice.

I don't think there's much else to report.
teylaminh: (Edward - cookie heart)
That was quite pleasant. Paul was working silly shifts this weekend (2 til 10 both days) so I basically had the weekend (and the computer!) to myself. Despite that, I was even marginally productive - cleaned the kitchen and bathroom, planted the kitchen herb garden pot, and got some bits of shopping on the Sunday.

Of course, the rest of it was spent on the PC. ;)

I've spent most of the weekend indulging unashamedly in Sunset Boulevard fandom, basically - re-reading old fic, e-mail tennises with [livejournal.com profile] sweeterthing and Jenny (from Georgia) about SB fic and introspection, and chatting to Eni on YIM after scanning the old UK tour brochure. Which reminds me, I must scan the APR libretto pictures, too.

Sunday was mostly spent working on my new layout, which I'm still not entirely happy with... haven't even attempted to code it yet. I was going to use the 'Expressive' layout but the CSS looks really bloody complicated, and I'm somewhat out of practice, but I think I can achieve the same effect using 'Bloggish' - i.e. a background and a header banner. I have the background sorted, but need to work on the banner. As ever, these things look so much more impressive in my head, and would be a lot easier if I could draw. My Google image hunt was less than fruitful, to say the least, though I did have a second option for the picture that I might try... :P

As a result of re-reading the e-mail tennises with Jenny, I was randomly reinspired last night to make a start on our SB / Breakfast at Tiffany's crossover, the unoriginally titled "Sunset at Tiffany's". I think that was actually going to be the real title, too, but I might come up with something else... This was the thing which was going to have four different endings because we couldn't decide which one we preferred. I imagine Mr Capote is turning in his grave, but probably no more than Mr Wilder is. ;)

Random fic details, for those who might be even remotely interested... )

I absolutely cannot find words to express how glad I am that I got to see the London production of Sunset. It is a fandom that is very high on the list of favourites, and I can't believe I fell out of it. I felt so ALIVE on 28th February; I've not enjoyed a show like that since... I can't remember. The Woman in White, probably, as after that point things started to go downhill. Before seeing SB again I was almost about to give up on writing completely (as a result of too many issues to mention), but it has reinspired me to the point of absolute ridiculousness - for fanfic, for icons, for thought-provoking discussion, for general creativity. I can't explain why, and I don't want to analyse it. There's just something about the story which has always captured my imagination and never let go, and somehow, I'd forgotten that.

Glumness )

Meh. Sorry, this started out as a positive post. In any case, many many thanks to Eni for putting up with my inane messenger ramblings of late...

Anyway, in other news, this month is horrendous for birthdays and events, including Mother's Day. And then in April its our anniversary (four years!), and hopefully after that I should have some money. I say this every year, of course. One year it might be true. :P

Right. It is now lunchtime, so I shall post this and have my sandwich.
teylaminh: (Erik - blank)
It's a known fact that office humour is never funny outside of the office, for the simple reason that at the point it happens it's usually as a result of stress or tedium. That being said, however, I have to share these two things from this week.

The first was on Monday or Tuesday (can't remember which) when I'd gone upstairs to warm up my coffee in the microwave and ran into Peter making himself some tea. He mentioned that all the spoons had disappeared - we had a very large collection of the red plastic spoons from Pret, but they'd all disappeared. In explaining where they'd all come from, apparently it transpired that Rob was taking handfuls whenever he was in there - they may well be free, but Pret probably didn't anticipate the amount that Rob's taking.

He described him as the "Spoon Baron of Birmingham", and then followed this up with: "It comes to something when you have to make your tea with a fork."

Well, I found it funny. :P

Today's amusement should not be as funny as it is... I came in this morning and Alison asked me what the group email addresses were so she could send an Angry E-mail, as someone had stolen one of her two remaining slices of bread and left the other one to go stale, thus depriving her of breakfast.

By the time she was sending the e-mail I think she'd mellowed somewhat and laughing about it... In any event, the Food Thief strikes again. It's kind of ridiculous that in an office full of apparent grown-ups, someone is still resorting to stealing food out of the cupboards and fridge. Short of labelling everything, I don't know what else we can do. It was funny more for the BREDS R SRS BIZNIZ than anything else.

Thank goodness it's Friday. I'm actually not as tired today as I have been for the rest of the week, so that's something. My cough / sore throat is coming and going, though the gargly stuff does seem to work in stopping the pain. At least I can sing again, so should be able to do the performance on 10th February at the ICC. The only annoying thing is my eyes keep getting very 'gunged up' when I'm tired, making my vision all blurry. I had this over Christmas too, so hopefully it'll go away again.

Should be a quiet weekend, I think. Paul isn't working this week, and we're seeing [livejournal.com profile] herringprincess on Sunday for lunch so she can hand over our Christmas presents. Hopefully I'll find some time to watch the X-Files first movie and then can move on to season 6. SO MANY favourite episodes: "Triangle" (technically brilliant as well as OMGshippy), "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas", "Arcadia"... possibly a few more I've forgotten. I think maybe also "Millennium", though that might be season 7, I forget.

Last night I made a lasagne. Possibly my best lasagne ever. The only cheaty thing in there is the white sauce, which is a Bisto one, as I can't make white sauce. (Yet still not quite as cheaty as buying the jarred stuff.) I discovered a neat trick whilst making it wherein before I put in the layers of pasta, I brushed them on both sides with water. I've often found when I've made one before that there just isn't quite enough moisture in the filling to cook the pasta properly, but the water solved my problem, and avoided the cumbersome process of cooking it before I started. :)

Also, yesterday at work was boring for the majority of the afternoon, so I sat down and looked at my POTO fic again, and managed 1000 new words. :) If I can get it finished at some point I may start posting it somewhere, assuming I can ever get the first chapter right. I started the fic some time ago and the first chapter still feels a bit... out of practice. I keep tweaking it, but I might just re-write it.

I was also randomly re-inspired the other night for a bit of "Sweet Intoxication", though then didn't have chance to attempt to write it. I desperately need to finish that story. In fact, I think I will try and do so before posting the new one, as some manner of incentive. And GAH, don't get me started on "Strange Glue" (the UB-fic). I really do need to update that one, but I'm a bit under-inspired. Hopefully when the series comes back I can get back into the flow of it...

Okay, I'm going to stop writing this entry now, because otherwise it'll never end. If yesterday was about Phantom, today will be about Jonathan Creek. Not that I have anywhere to share that one, of course. *sigh*
teylaminh: (Retro - coffee)
But an enjoyable one, nonetheless.

I awoke ridiculously early (for a Saturday, anyway) and proceeded to make my way towards Birmingham, leaving Paul with a selection of various chores to do whilst I was out. I was heading off, excitingly, to meet [livejournal.com profile] jackiesjottings, who was supposed to come to Brum just before Christmas but for a lack of funds.

A Grand Day Out )

I should like the record to show, for Jackie's interest, that my area is not normally renowned for people dying on the high street. It's usually quite salubrious. :P

Today I've done not much - watched the Eastenders omnibus (the ending made me cry, damn you Stacey Slater and your dysfunctional family!) and made cakes for Paul's work, as they were moaning apparently as I wasn't well enough to make them over the New Year period. :P

Hopefully Jackie and I will get to meet again some point this year as she's invited me to her beloved Glastonbury. It was a thoroughly enjoyable meet-up yesterday. My favourite thing about meeting online friends whom you've known for a while online is that the conversation flows as though you've known each other for years. It's been the same with all the people I've met, from [livejournal.com profile] winter_jasmine to [livejournal.com profile] 803am. A strange phenomenon, really. :)
teylaminh: (Christmas - bauble)
That was a pleasant, if slightly exhausting, weekend...

Starting with Friday night, and our first Messiah concert. Compared to the Beethoven it's positively relaxing. :P Paul came home about half an hour after me, drunker than promised (four drinks my big fat arse...) and without his phone, lost at some point in the process of going home. DRINKING IS BAD, MMKAY?

Saturday )

Anyway, at least now the tree is up and that's one element of stress dealt with.

Sunday was the direct opposite. Somehow over the course of Saturday night I drank three glasses of wine, so woke up feeling awful not only with a headache, but random aches and pains from all the hard work the day before. I watched a few episodes of X-Files in bed and then went back to sleep until 1.45. We completely forgot to ring people as promised, so that'll have to be done today.

Sunday night we ordered pasta from Pizza Hut / Pasta Hut (quite nice) which we ate in separate rooms because Paul was playing poker, and then he buggered off out for a drink with Alex (who is temporarily back from Gran Canaria) even though he's seeing him tomorrow, despite saying we would watch something together at 9.00. Thanks. :P

Anyway, work is okay today - plenty to do, so I won't get to leave early, but at least I'm not bored. Things are going to be quite frantic from now on.

Weekend...

Oct. 27th, 2008 10:44 am
teylaminh: (Chicago - cell block tango)
Alternatively active and lazy, this weekend.

Saturday involved a morning trip into Kings Heath to get meat (from the butcher) and to stock up the freezer, hence just under £70(!) in Iceland. £15 of that was wine, though. :P

In the afternoon we made our way by taxi to the Briar for my birthday drinkings. My mum and David had already arrived before us (at 3.00pm, the allotted time) and we waited for Lloyd, Derek and Denise to turn up. It turned out Lloyd had decided to go and see a film which started at 2.40 - thanks for that. :P

Lloyd then proceeded to get us kicked out of the pub. Or, well, that's what we said happened. What really happened was he managed to knock over most of his first pint, went to get another one, and the bar staff decreed he was "too drunk" because he was "slurring his words and swaying". *ahem* In any event, we finished our food and then decamped to the Trocadero instead, and spent the rest of the evening there.

Most of that time was spent watching Derek be the resident clown. The quote of the night was probably: "Of course I've got a chin! It holds my mouth together!", though there was all manner of other hilarity. It's all documented in photographic form on Paul's Facebook, obviously. I have no idea whether they're publicly visible...

Alison arrived shortly after 8.00, at the Briar, whereupon she rang Derek and made her way to the Trocadero.

Paul, Lisa and I left around 10.00pm. Paul and I had a bit of a silly argument (apparently about different things) just before bed, but only because he was drunk and I was therefore unable to differentiate between a serious comment and a joke. It was pointless, anyway. (I maintain it was still a horrible thing to say, drunk, joking or otherwise...)

On Sunday we didn't do anything remotely exciting. I had a headache and my back was hurting from not sitting properly in the pub, so that rather scuppered my enthusiasm to do anything.

Back at work today and the lift is broken (again!).

I have a very busy couple of weeks ahead...

This weekend: bloody rehearsal in bloody Gloucester, followed by Hallowe'en party / Movie Night thing.

Next weekend: fireworks at Paul's mum's for her birthday

Weekend after that: concert at Town Hall, so rehearsing all day for that, too.

December is also just as bad, with two Messiah concerts and Christmas to contend with, as well as all the usual festive stressing. My plan is the usual: one day off work in order to get the majority of my shopping done, tree is going up first weekend in December so I don't have to worry about it, and get it all over with as soon as possible. If you invite me to the pub a week before the event, you can readily expect me to kill you. :P

Christmas should really not be so stressful.

PS: Loving the new Livejournal front page. :D
teylaminh: (PotC - Pirate!)
It's been a lovely day so far. Even the weather hasn't been too bad; the sun is warm and only ruined by the cold wind...

We went for breakfast at Delilicious, a local deli / sandwich place which does very nice food, and then headed straight into town to get a new camera. It's a joint purchase on the credit card so I don't feel as guilty as I should. ;)

We have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3, in black with silver embellishments. The camera was £130, with a 4GB SDHC card for £20 (reduced from £50), and with a case and three-year warranty (just in case) it was £190. Not bad at all. WHEE NEW CAMERA!

I've also received the following:

From Paul:

~ Super Mario on DS (which was bought ages ago)
~ Anjum's New India cookery book, based on her "Indian Food Made Easy" show on BBC2. Now I can learn to make curry!
~ Another BBC book of aerial photographs of the Earth, really cool.

From Mum and David:

~ The Last Unicorn (the book)
~ A cuddly Zero from NBC
~ A miniature herb garden in a pot for the kitchen, so we can grow our own fresh herbs. :D

In addition, several Facebook messages and a random and pleasantly surprising text from [livejournal.com profile] flatline2010.

Going out for a meal later at Cafe Rouge, because we can get a lovely discount. Thank you, BCC. :)
teylaminh: (Photo - rainbow)
Mmm, four-day weekend. Most of which has been unproductive but sociable, so not an entire loss.

Friday - we rearranged the attic, which didn't take as long as anticipatd. The wardrobe is now storing all the videos and some boxes, thus clearing floor space, and the television is plugged in, to prepare for such an eventuality that we get a console of some description or an aerial at the very least, so that if people stay over they can watch it. :P

Most of the rest of Friday I spent finishing the [livejournal.com profile] redux_08 community. OMG, so good. Epic, but brilliant. I just couldn't put it down. I advise all others who were disappointed in At World's End to have a look - especially if you are of the Jack/Elizabeth school of thought. ;)

On Saturday I met up with Alison and we went to Kings Heath park for a bit, where we chatted and watched toddlers running about the place. Quite a nice day, weather-wise. Paul and I also watched the Simpsons movie in the morning on Sky Premier.

Yesterday we met up with Denise and Lloyd and not Derek, and subsequently Lorna and Bethan and several other people. I ran out of energy pretty quickly, though, for some reason, and we sloped off after a couple of drinks. One more drink in Bacchus and then home via Blockbuster to pick up some films. Once back we watched the first of them, Funny Games US, which was good, if a little slow and strange. I want to see the original UK version even if the American one is shot-for-shot, just because.

Oh, yes - also yesterday I encountered the biggest spider I've EVER seen outside of a pet shop, sitting on the reverse side of the voile at the windows. I thought it was a daddylonglegs at first because of the general shape of it, and then realised what the Hell it was. Needless to say, I legged it. Paul attempted to catch it, but apparently it ran away behind the wardrobe. Meh. I've been horribly paranoid ever since. *shudders* I'm amazed I managd to get out of the bedroom, in actual fact, as usually I end up frozen in terror at the very sight of the bloody things. Perhaps I'm getting slighty better...

Later today we having Lisa up for dinner, and that's about it. I'm still bloody knackered, though - four-day weekends are clearly not good for me.

The re-tagging of my journal didn't happen, either. Ah well, it's an ongoing process...
teylaminh: (JC - cockroach OTP - J/M)
This weekend has been quite insanely sociable...

On Friday, as already mentioned, I moved some bookcases, after traipsing to Iceland to get party food for Saturday.

On Saturday morning, having eaten no breakfast, Paul and I set about moving the videos up into the attic. This didn't actually take too long, so then we started to move the wardrobe up as well. Naturally, we got it nearly to the top when my mum and David turned up, so I was effectively trapped in the attic for a while until we could get it into the room. Then I had to put the piles of videos on the bed back into the wardrobe/unit to get them out of the way (and clear a path to the bed) in case anyone needed to stay over.

Anyway, we now have a shiny new(ish) telly and there is lots of wall space behind it, and my space-age lamp is now a focal point rather than being hidden up high on top of the wardrobe like it was before... And also a black bookcase awaiting shelves and books, so the Book Corner is almost complete...

After that we went out to get food from McDonalds... I think the rain put a lot of people off, as for once it wasn't completely rammed. (I blame the unprecedented McDonalds craving on the girl who got on the bus on Friday with Burger King...) Then we headed off to Blockbuster to find some Rubbish Films (TM) for the evening's festivities, and THEN a trip on the 11 to an off-licence in Cotteridge which sold Brothers Strawberry Perry, as Somerfield did not. As soon as we got off the bus it started hammering it down, of course, so it's probably just as well I hadn't put any washing out like I was intending when I got up and the sun was shining...

Got in, had a bath, and waited for people to arrive...

Movie Night )

On Sunday I didn't do much, at least by comparison to Saturday, but did go out to the pub for lunch with [livejournal.com profile] herringprincess, as she was unable to go to the movie night. That was pleasant, as we haven't seen each other in a while, and we had a natter and caught up and stuff. Alison walked home and I got the bus because my leg was hurting from all the furniture-moving the day before (still does a bit today) and sat down to watch 'Stenders on replay. Paul inflicted Human Traffic on me after dinner, which was okay... possibly I am rather missing the point, as for the majority of the film (especially the come-down scenes) I was just thinking "And this is meant to be fun... why?" Still, John Simm, yay.

Back at work today and nothing to report. Except that there's going to be more Jonathan Creek at some point this year. Derek mentioned this on Saturday as coming from the mouth of Alan Davies himself, presumably on QI, which we'd missed (and which isn't on Iplayer - WTF, BBC? Bastards.) and I went to check this morning. I was holding some vague hope for a return of Caroline Quentin, but the article states Jonathan will have yet another new female sidekick... We can only hope she won't be as cataclismically annoying as Carla Borego. (I mean, I love Julia Sawalha, and it's a testament to her acting ability that she could make me HATE HER so much...)

So, the lack of Maddy = sad. The comeback of Jonathan = marvellous, however. Perhaps it'll balance out. I hold out no hope whatsoever of them remembering to mentionh Maddy this time, though... it was tagged on at the end of the last series as something of an afterthought (or so it appeared) and it's been five years since then. Part of me thinks they won't forget her, but a bigger part of me knows full well that Renwick has never been that focused on the Jonathan/Maddy dynamic insofar as it was actually there when he was writing, and he's more than happy to try and recreate that dynamic with Jonathan's latest assistant. FAIL. In a word.

Hrm. I'm betting on a Christmas special, in any event...

I shall now sign this off, as it's getting far too long. I had more to say about the Jonathan Creek thing, but it fell out of my brain on the bus journey home thanks to screaming children and general tiredness. Bah.
teylaminh: (Photo - Atget mouth door)
And also not quite as insanely busy as anticipated...

On Friday night, Paul went out to see a gig at the Station. Around 9.30 he texted to say he was going back to Richie's afterwards, and I killed time by finding Day of the Tentacle to try out on DOSBox. I can't remember what time I went to bed, but in any event woke up at 2.30am to find him still not back. And, being somewhat half-awake, phoned him up and demanded he come home because I hadn't anticipated him staying out quite so late. Which resulted in a less than pleasant discussion a few minutes later, obviously, and some awkwardness the next morning as well, but at least the air had cleared by the afternoon.

Of the evening Paul was supposed to be going to a house party in Stoke, which was apparently meant to have a barbecue, except I suspect the rain called off play. He didn't go in the end, as it transpired, due to toothache. Also, I'd put some washing out to try in the frankly glorious weather that morning, only to have to rush it back inside when the heavens opened three hours later. *shakes fist* Curse you, weather god!

[livejournal.com profile] last_dance came over that evening (by bike, which was incredibly impressive), whereupon I fed her bolognese and we watched Sweeney Todd, followed by The Never-Ending Story II, as Naomi had also come along so I could return her copy of the novel, having borrowed it about four years ago... Paul joined us for the second film and wow. SO CONFUSING. It's like they took a few random elements of the book and attempted to force a plot out of them. Plus they missed out my favourite bit about the 'Many-Coloured Death' and when Bastian wishes himself to be King of the Night Forest, which I felt was a bit of a cop-out because I was looking forward to seeing how it translated to film. Meh.

It was very odd, though. We couldn't make any sense at all of what was happening. Yes - three reasonably intelligent adults failed to decipher a children's film.

Sunday was mostly sedate, with the afternoon taken up with a surprise party for Paul's brother Darren, who has recently achieved his Doctorate. So that was quite nice. Afterwards Paul and I decamped to his mum's house for a bit, half-watching the A Bit of Fry & Laurie marathon that Noel had already started, before getting a taxi back around 11.00, and then ordering in a take-away.

Unfortunately, thanks to a combination of buffet food, the two smoothies I had and the two bottles of flavoured perry, my IBS has returned with a vengeance today. I haven't had proper fibre intake for a few days, too, so the 'diet' must start properly again this week. I'm going to have the bike off Paul's mum but need to get a bicycle pump before I can ride it, so need to pop down there one of the days to bring it home. We were going to take it last night but didn't think it would fit in the taxi...

Anyway. I'm feeding my stomach probiotic yoghurt and dried cranberries in the hope of flusing the badness out. Yay.

PS: Now that I have a functional PC / DVD drive again, I need to make some Tim Burton-themed icons. Ohyes.
teylaminh: (Random - Eyes)
I completely forgot to update on my everso exciting weekend. :P

On Friday we went out for a curry for [livejournal.com profile] herringprincess's birthday, after meeting at her house. We ended up at Punjab Paradise (for whom we have a menu at home so will try them again) and it was all very nice and a very reasonable total, too, considering there were 16 of us and nearly everyone had a starter. I had a couple of good conversations with [livejournal.com profile] flatline2010 whilst Paul and Lloyd were out having a smoke, which was nice. I was absolutely stuffed afterwards, though. Farrr too much food.

After that we went back to Alison's house briefly for a toilet stop, before heading out to find a pub. Eventually we ended up at the Village, which was surprisingly empty, and sat outside after a brief argument with one of the bar staff when they IDed one of our clearly-over-21 group. Mad Scary Kat at least proved useful in that regard.

We had spread over two patio tables and our table were apparently at war with the other one, even though they didn't know that. :)

Everyone decamped inside towards the end and there was a band playing something resembling jazz, though by that point I'd run out of steam and just wanted to go home. At least we weren't in Birmingham so it was just a short 50 ride down the road, and the bus turned up fairly quickly.

On Saturday we got up early because Phil (Trevor-the-landlord's mate) was due to come and fix our bathroom light pull. Trevor phoned at around midday to say Phil had some jobs to do for him (Trevor) before he could get to us and hence would be turning up mid-afternoon, if at all. So we essentially got up for no reason.

I put some washing out (after changing to another new washing line which is actually a washing line rather than a piece of rope) because the sun was out, and naturally it then clouded over and was horrible all day. After six hours the washing was still not dry, but I brought it in anyway, immediately following which, the sun came out again. The weather doth mock me.

Of the evening, Paul went out to a gig, and I had fully intended to watch Charlotte's Web that evening, but was distracted by shiny things in the form of an AIM conversation with Eni in which she threw reactions / feedback at me about various pieces of fic, mostly Jonathan Creek... Much fun. I fully intended to go to bed at around 11.30 or thereabouts, but got sucked into a random game instead...

Sunday was the usual, really: EastEnders, random behind-the-eye / temple headache (again! Stop it, body!) and the final part of Jack in the Beanstalk on SciFi, which was actually really good. Phil finally turned up at about 2.30 (midway through 'Stenders, typically) and was gone again within 10 minutes. Also, the sun actually stayed out long enough to do some washing / drying, which was much appreciated.

I am going to start doing food diary / weigh-in posts in the style of Bridget Jones (I'm re-reading the first book, as I now have Edge of Reason to read afterwards) but will personal-only them so as not to subject my friends-list to them. Unless anyone is desperately interested, in which case I'll make a filter...

And that's it.
teylaminh: (Christine - I can't escape)
I spent a bit of money today. Not all of it was for me, though...

First of all, at lunchtime I went to Zavvi to look for Alison's present*, and failed horribly because they were apparently in the process of refitting the entire store, and only a little part of it actually contained things to buy. The man on the tills was supremely unhelpful - "It'll probably be upstairs in the comedy section". Will it? Will it really? Hm. Funny how it wasn't, then.

So, having failed on that count, I instead got hold of a complete set of St Trinian's films for my grandmother (excepting the rubbish new one, of course) if she ever manages to come here for her belated birthday dinner at some point, the 2-disc special edition of Sweeney Todd and season 2 of Carnivále, which all came to £55. Not bad.

Then, after work, I went to Primark. It's absolutely the worst shop ever. Even at 4.00pm the queues are ridiculous. The thing I completely don't understand about it, though, is the way people just... leave things by the queuing area, as though they've suddenly decided at the very last minute that they don't want those shoes or that top. It's weird, not to mention lazy and slobbish. Whilst in Primark I got some new socks and some support tights, finally, and spent exactly £12.00 in there.

I had a little look in the new shoe shop that's opened where Topshop used to be but there was nothing particularly exciting there. It's like Brantano only not as good, really.

And finally, I managed to get a new swimming costume - £14 from Bonmarché. I am officially now a middle-aged woman (and if age is all in the mind, and I feel frelling ancient, why can't I retire yet? :P). But seriously? It should NOT be this difficult to find a swimming costume just because the rest of the known universe can (a) afford a nice tropical holiday or (b) is a stick figure. SOME OF US DO NOT LOOK GOOD IN BIKINIS. End of story.

Both of these shopping experiences were marred by the RUDEST SHOPPERS KNOWN TO MAN. If they weren't barging through me, standing in doorways, pushing me out of the way or prodding/poking/pushing me and my bag, they were just... there. Being annoying. Shopping is bloody annoying where other people are concerned.

Anyway. I think there are just a couple of other bits to get for Alison and I'm done.

*Ali - this is the present I mentioned which you might think was rubbish. It was going to be a complete, 6-DVD set of Eddie Izzard performances. I figured you already have them on video but it's always nice to have these things on DVD. Ah well. If I find it again you can have it for Christmas...

Better.

Okay. So yesterday's entry was mostly about getting something out of my brain which has been fermenting long enough. Something incredibly minor kicked it off, pissed me off, and I figured venting it was better than stewing about it all day and sulking at work. I'm hoping that now I can just forget about it and get on with my life without worrying about this particular issue. What's done is done, and that's that. (Eni - remind me to email you, if you're absolutely deathly curious...)

Anyway, it obviously didn't help that I was tired yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] marz109 read the entry and then told Paul and he rang me up all worried, bless him. As a result we went out for food instead of finding something to cook, and went to Kings (local curry house) for a proper sit-down curry instead of a takeaway.

It was all very nice (mine had slices of boiled egg in it!), and the portions were actually a reasonable size rather than being enormous. As Paul rightly pointed out, when you go for a curry, nobody comes over to check if your food is okay, because they know it is. ;) We had a bottle of wine between us which for some reason made me very drunk/tired very quickly, so by the time we got home again I was exhausted. I did potter about online a bit (reading fic when half-asleep and tipsy is brilliant, by the way) and then fell into bed around 9.30, finally going to sleep about 10.30ish... no idea what time, actually. Early, at any rate.

So today I've had too much sleep instead of too little... Tonight I will attempt to be slightly more productive, as there's washing up to be done and I have to cook before Paul goes out for the gig later. Busy weekend for him this week: gig tonight, we're meeting his mates Vicky and Sarah tomorrow and then he's going to a Eurovision party on Saturday. It's also Pride on Sunday but to be honest, this year I'd rather just enjoy the extended weekend, especially as we no longer get 'Council Tuesdays' (obviously everyone else booked that one off before I could even think about it...) Here's hoping the weather is nice, anyway, as last year it rained all day and was horrible...

Oh, on a completely unrelated note, I meant to post this a couple of weeks ago and forgot. Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] metalmikey666, God hates Goths now, apparently... I really want to think it's fake, but at the same time I suspect it may be genuine. Worth a look, anyway, for the sheer "whuh??" factor.

Aaanyway. Better do some work, I suppose.

So, [livejournal.com profile] yoshi and I have been working through The 10th Kingdom. I'd forgotten the sheer brilliance. Anyway, we just started on episode 2 last night, and as a result, for some reason, my brain gave me a mostly nonsensical Wolf/Virginia-centric dream. Much appreciated, but somewhat strange considering the first time I watched the series (back in sixth form) that ship took over my dreams then, too...

Which is precisely why, when I go to see the new X-Files movie in August (and seriously, I'll go on my own if I have to), despite the fact it's been years and I'm no longer obsessed with it (but, wow, good times...) I will doubtless squee like a fangirl at the inevitable MSR. :D

Old ships never die; they just wait, dormant, until such time as they have reason to pop up again. So much for objectivity, though. ;)

In other news, the credit card bill is currently quite horrendous, so no more spending. We have been quite bad, really, but at least both of us are paying it off. Must lay off it until December, October at the earliest. I'm hoping by the time my mum's birthday rolls around in August I'll have actual money to spend...

Went out last night to see Clare-from-Uni at the Green Rooms, which was nice... the paintings are completely different from when I was there in March for Lisa's birthday, so that was bizarre. Also I'd forgotten how expensive it was (£6.30 for a JD&coke and a vodka&pineapple!) but I'm probably too used to Wetherspoon's prices... Still, a pleasant evening of reminiscence and general nattering.

Barely any work here today but what there is has been urgent - typical. Must pay off first card payment tonight / tomorrow. I tried to do it online earlier but there doesn't seem to be an obvious manner of doing so, so I'll have to wait until tonight and check the back of the statement.

PS: In completely unrelated news, I'm trying to find some decent pictures of Justin Lee Collins; one of him grinning (maybe with two thumbs up) and one of him looking miserable. It's for an icon. Google were unfruitful. If anyone could help, that would be marvellous...

As an addendum to yesterday's post, apparently the rest of season 2 of UB will be back on Channel 4 on 30 May. So, a whole nother month to wait... this is from someone on the forums, though, so I hold little to no hope it's actually true...

Paul and I are going to Asda tonight for our bi-monthly Meat Excursion, although mostly because we've run out of everything from toilet roll to fabric softener. At least everything runs out simultaneously... and at least, equipped with a credit card, my current account will not reel from the gutpunch that is the inevitable expenditure... I will be financially sound by the end of this year, dammit. :P

I'm currently in the process of trying to find somewhere for a friend from Uni to live for six months, and luckily enough, Richie is moving out of his room. Would be nice if she took it up, as it's only up the road from me. :) I would offer our attic, but to be honest it's more fair to pay someone to live up there than the other way around... aside from the fact that it's full of my boxes, it's cold in winter, hot in summer, and the ceiling is caving in and is literally held up with sellotape... so not exactly habitable.

Here's hoping the nice weather holds out for the weekend and bank holiday, even though we're going to be moving furniture on Saturday. I'll be sure to post before and after shots. Even bought a new duvet cover last night from Roseby's that was reduced from £19 to £9.50, in honour of the occasion. ;)

Wedding &c.

That was a pleasant, if exhausting, few days.

Saturday was spent doing incredibly little, although we did head out briefly to get Paul a hair cut. This weekend we have both suffered with Stylist-Giving-Us-Their-Own-Hairstyle Syndrome, as the guy in the barber's gave him the exact same 'mullet'-type style as himself. Rather a change from Paul's usual army-issue short-back-and-sides, but it looks quite good. :)

Sunday I spent packing the case, doing washing, the usual things. 'Stenders has hit a bit of an interest low at the moment, but it's to be expected post-Easter. The Frank/Pat plotline was nice (I like it when they intersperse canon, despite randomly changing actresses), though I'm not quite sure if I'm glad of the return of Ricky and Bianca... Bianca's current troubles are looking to provide some entertainment, at least...

So, on Monday we left the house at 9.45 to catch a 10.48 train to Manchester Piccadilly, and then onwards to Manchester Airport. If nothing else, this has proven that Manchester is a viable option should we ever be able to afford a holiday, as the journey was relatively painless - no delays, and we got straight onto a train to the airport.

Once at the airport we hopped into a black cab and told him where we were going. When I looked at the respective locations of the hotel and the airport on Google, it didn't look too far, but because it was out-of-area (the hotel was in Cheshire, some 18 miles from the airport), it came to a flat rate of £25... The driver was nice enough, though. He kept pointing out where footballers lived and saying how much various houses cost, as it was a very posh area.

The hotel was gorgeous. Lovely grounds, which it would have been nice to explore had the weather been better. We found our room (a good size, and also a large bathroom) and got changed, then went to find Lisa and Heather in the bar. Heather had driven Lisa up and we got there about 30 seconds before them, as we ran into them at reception. ;)

It turned out my ex-manager was there (Carol W, she of the Inline bannage) but luckily enough she didn't seem to either recognise nor acknowledge me, so no awkward conversations.

The service was lovely, and Jen's dress was gorgeous. :) The only trouble with going to other people's weddings is I inevitably end up thinking "ooh, that's a good idea" and stealing it for future reference.

In between the service and the meal, Lisa and I went around the tables turning over the napkins, having discovered that they'd been arranged upside down (the bows uppermost), and given the hours we spend folding them and putting ribbon around them, it simply wouldn't do. That didn't take too long, luckily.

The meal was very nice, also. Melon with red berry sauce for starters (which I managed a fair bit of, despite not liking melon - again, it suffers with that thing of my liking the texture but not the flavour...), chicken with vegetables in a sort of mushroomy sauce (and peppercorn gravy) for the main, and little chocolate mousse things for dessert. Delicious. :) Also, we were kept plied with free wine and champagne for the toasts.

During the gap whilst they set up the band space / disco in the other room, we were sitting in the bar talking and eventually decided to go and get changed into more comfortable clothing - at the last wedding I went to (Tor's, where I was ill) everyone was changed before the party afterwards. Naturally, at this one, everyone stayed in their wedding garb. Typical. Anyway, as a result of our bad timing and not knowing when things were going to happen, we managed to miss the first dance. Bugger.

By about 10.00pm when we were sitting in the disco / band room, I had somewhat run out of steam. I was also trying not to fall into the trap of thinking "Fuck, I'm never going to be able to afford any of this...", which made me a bit blah for the majority of the evening.

The 'buffet' was a choice of chicken curry or (presumably) beef stroganoff, with some of the wedding cake for afters, which was very nice. Jen had thoughtfully decided on part fruitcake, part sponge. :)

The evening's entertainment was provided by three bands, which IIRC were The Klopeks, The Hunchbacks and 3 1/2 Inch Floppy. Earplugs had been provided, thankfully. Still, by that point I was a little too tired to appreciate it. Paul and I sloped off to bed at around 12.30 and watched about 10 minutes of Battle Royale on Channel 4 before giving up. Apparently Jen stayed up until 3.00am...

The breakfast next morning was also nice - the choice was "whatever you want" so I had a full English, minus beans and tomatoes but plus hash browns, and it was all very good except for the mushrooms, which were a bit tasteless...

Jen gave us a lift to the nearest station (before which, Dave gave me a bone-crunching hug on our departure) and we got a train from there to Piccadilly at a cost of about 2.90. At Piccadilly we spotted a train to Reading via Birmingham so got on it, then sat there for about an hour as it wasn't due to leave for ages. Ah well. Got back around 1.30, whereupon I had a shower (using the new shampoo I got from Supercuts - v. nice, smells of oranges, hair all soft...) and we went out for McDonalds.

I managed to drag myself to choir that evening despite falling asleep on the bus there, as it was the final rehearsal before Saturday's Mahler concert in Tewkesbury (this time I'm getting a lift home...)

Back at work today and it's not been too bad, although I was very tired this morning. Going swimming tonight and then next week we'll be back to Mondays and hopefully regular attendance. ;) Next Wednesday, Paul and I will have been together three long years. How terrifying...
teylaminh: (MH - tekiclutch - spirit bunnies)
Here we are, then, my final day of leave. As ever, I've had lots of time off work and achieved very little, although I suppose slightly more than usual...

We were supposed to rearrange the bedroom furniture on Saturday but that plan was scuppered by Paul having a cold and therefore not feeling remotely inclined to do anything energetic, which is fair enough, I suppose. Really we should rearrange it at the same time as redecorating, but I just had a must-move-furniture vibe going on...

So, Easter, then. On Friday night we traipsed to the Junction in Harborne because Heather had finally passed her driving test and wanted to celebrate. It took ages to get there because the buses were on Saturday service (which, with the 11, might as well be non-existent) and it was the other end of Harborne compared to the bus stop, but nevertheless, the pub was okay. Whilst there I spoke very little (the music was just that little bit too intrusive and the table was too wide, besides which Jen, Lisa and Heather had ensconced themselves into a corner before we arrived so we couldn't hear them at all), practically sat on top of the radiator because we were by the door and it was bloody freezing, and also tried some pistachios, for which I have now acquired a taste. That'll be a decent snack food, at least.

I was still feeling vaguely 'meh' for most of the night (in writing things down in my proper journal, I narrowed this down to the fact that everyone around me is doing all the things I want to eventually achieve, with Heather driving, Jen getting married in two weeks and Paul's mate Tor being pregnant - my body clock is tick-tocking quite substantially) but then it turned out to be PMT as the promised 'spotting' side effect of my new pills kicked in. Not sure if this will be a regular feature or not; at least with the others my periods were regular, so I hope these don't make them irregular again...

Anyway, Saturday we did mostly nothing, I think, except watch Delicatessen. Paul wasn't that impressed, but I liked it. I need to dig out The City of Lost Children again and re-watch it...

On Sunday I cooked a roast pork dinner (which is becoming my speciality; Paul's is roast chicken) and we're having the remains of that in a stir-fry tonight. And of course, I watched the dirge-like angst-fest of Easter Eastenders; I think right now, all the characters are getting right what they deserve: Lucy, Tanya, Ian and Max inclusive. I am following the emerging Phil/Shirley ship with some interest, mind you... The writers have this uncanny way of making previously incompatible characters seem perfect for each other without an obvious shift, which is nice. :)

Yesterday involved similarly doing nothing. We used another two-steaks-and-a-bottle-of-wine voucher to eat at Wetherspoons (must break that habit again...) and watched half of A Scanner Darkly before sleepiness kicked in. Given I'd already watched all of Annie and the majority of Prince of Egypt (which was a somewhat interesting experience given Discovery's 'Egypt Weekend', which I missed most of, unfortunately) I think three films in one day was more than enough to be going on with. Oh, and I think I also watched Mr Bean's Holiday just because it was on, which actually wasn't too horrendous. But possibly only because I like Mr Bean, in that clinging-onto-the-last-vestiges-of-my-childhood kind of way.

Back to work tomorrow, which I'm partially glad about. Being off work gives me rather too much time to think about stuff and I'll be glad of the distraction. Once I finish this entry and my lunch I need to make fairy cakes (change of plan from original idea) for work, but that shouldn't take too long. I only hope I managed to get a bit more sleep tonight than I did last night: I was awake from about 5.00 to 6.45 for no other reason than my brain refused to STFU, but at least I managed to catch up on that between 8.30 and 10.30... strange dreams included.

I suppose I should sign this off...
teylaminh: (Google - Home)
I am still alive...

I haven't done an LJ entry in over a week, but mostly because I haven't done very much... Usually my 'not doing very much' equates to 'lurking about online', it's too damned cold to sit in the corridor on the computer... So, anyway, here's what I've been up to in my week/s off...

On Thursday I did my usual fare of nothing. The other reason I've not been spending too much time on the PC is because the monitor is too high (due to this one being a desktop rather than a tower) and it gives me a crick in my neck... and if I adjust the chair my legs won't fit under the keyboard tray. Inconvenient, but at least the bloody thing turns on...

I believe most of Friday was quite similar... Of the evening we went out with Paul's mate, Tor (who announced she was pregnant), because the going-out for Jen and Dave's pre-wedding get-together didn't happen due to illness... I don't think I could have coped with another night out after last week, though...

On Saturday it was [livejournal.com profile] falling_softly's birthday, which was actually mostly quite sedate... The only downside was the Drunken Twat at the table near us who was offended by our very presence, but thankfully he left after an hour or so. Mostly the clientelle of the Briar Rose is okay, but unfortunately the combination of cheap booze and (now, alas) television screens showing the rugby brings in a lower denomination of human life, like the aforesaid Drunken Twat.

Other than that it was a plesant evening. Denise and I watched the boys playing two silly drunken games ("Fizzbuzz" and "I Have Never", the latter of which I loathe and detest), which was possibly more amusing than actually playing. Paul got a little bit annoying on the way home but at least realised that and calmed down again. I think our *ahem* screaming row a few weeks ago helped to clear the air and made me perhaps a little more tolerant. As much as the rows themselves aren't particularly pleasant, they are useful for getting stuff out into the open...

Sunday was lazy...

On Monday I cleaned the kitchen cupboards and rearranged them a bit so we can find things... also made a bit more room in the process, but only just. The rest of the week has involved doing nothing whatsoever except watching my usual fare of Rubbish Daytime Television (This Morning right through to Jeremy Kyle... I know, I know...)

Oh, on Tuesday morning I traipsed up to Selly Oak Hospital to the Dermatology Department regarding the mole on my stomach. The doctor there recommended that I didn't get it removed because the scar that would be left would be more irritating and quite possibly bigger than the mole itself. Not what I wanted to hear... obviously I didn't bring up that I wanted to get a tattoo over it anyway, as he would probably have recommended not doing that, either. He also said that most GP surgeries are quite happy to remove moles themselves once they're happy that Dermatology have cleared them, but, well, my GP surgery doesn't have the facilities to do that, which is why I had the referral to the hospital in the first place. *SIGH*

It was incredibly frustrating and I spent the rest of the day feeling mildly annoyed, to the extent that I didn't bother going to choir. Just, the thought of having to go out again when I was already cold (I had the fire on from about 2.00pm...) and having to keep repeating stuff because it wasn't right... it didn't appeal. We have next week off for good behaviour for Easter, also... Instead, Paul and I went to the pub for tea (local Ember Inns), which was nice. I've been feeling a bit meh since Saturday, to be honest... Mostly I attribute this to the fact that Ali and I haven't been swimming for two weeks for a number of reasons and my endorphine levels are low, but there is also a Certain Issue I'm trying to work through which wasn't helped by Saturday.

Subsequently my productivity thus far this week has been to almost finish my rose embroidery. I should get that done today and then I can finally frame and hang the thing, then work on getting another one started... I find embroidery quite therapeutic, somehow...

(And last night I joined [livejournal.com profile] geneandalex, an Ashes to Ashes shipper community, and read lots of fanfic. The Inner Shipper requires feeding, and the Ugly Betty section on FFN has been a bit sparse lately...)

On today's to-do list is to go through the boxes in the attic, but BLOODY HELL, it's cold. Where's spring gone?
teylaminh: (Photo- rose)
I think I last updated on Thursday, so here we go...

Firstly, a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] thefleshfailure, as I completely forgot to text yesterday. Hope you had a good one.

Friday )

Saturday )

Sunday was the usual fare of EastEnders watching and very little else. We watched The Pursuit of Happyness in the evening (after Wife Swap, of course) and subsequently I dreamt that I was an intern at a stockbroker firm and the written exam was about The Mighty Boosh... bizarre, to say the least.

So, that's that. Back to normal for a while now. Three more full weeks of work and then my Easter leave, which I am muchly looking forward to... Having said that, there is still plenty to do in the interim...
