teylaminh: (Most Haunted team)

Update on general things...

Well, I'm back.  Huzzah for that.  I've nearly sorted all my stuff out, just got some general debris to shift back up to my room, which then needs re-tidying (although I've been trying to do that as I go along and been marginally successful) and some bits for the bathroom.

I really wish people would let me screw my life up on my own...  I can't do three things at once.  It's either tidy up the stuff from the hall, phone the job centre people about job seekers' allowance, or go into town to find a job.  If I don't do any of these things, I'm going to get screamed at, so, y'know, which am I supposed to do?

*sigh*

Other than that, nothing to report, other than the fact that Most Haunted brought their three-night live investigation to various places in Derby the exact weekend I happened to leave.  Grr.  That being said, it was quite interesting, and Derek's possession by 'Charlie' Stanhope only added fuel to my Derek/Yvette shipping vibes.  Talking of which, I extended the plot for my Come Forward idea... Everything as it was before under the cut, plus new bits...

Summary:  Essentially, it’s a love story involving four people, set against the backdrop of a television production.  There’s a twist, and as yet, I don’t know how it’s going to end.
(Dis)claimer:  *coughs*  Well, technically, this isn’t my completely original idea.  The characters and their surroundings are based on reality, but I’ve changed all the names to protect the innocent and oblivious.  The idea for the plot is mine, but is also based, in part, on that same reality.  Fans of “Most Haunted” will recognise this instantly, and will know exactly who I’m referencing with it.  I want the record to show that the real life counterparts of these characters do not know about this, and that this in no way reflects their situation, nor does it reflect how I think their situation is or should be.
Rating:  PG to PG-13.  Not sure yet.
Dedication:  To Yvette and Karl, Derek and Gwen, Richard, Phil, and all the others.  Oh, and Matthew ‘Mr. Grumpy’ Smith, because he makes life more interesting.
Author’s Notes:  As I said, it’s only based partially on reality.  “Most Haunted” is a non-fictional television series and as such has no ‘characters’ nor ‘canon’; however, the characters in this are based on the presenters and crew of the series, using some of their idiosyncrasies and mannerisms.  Some of the situations described really happened to the presenters in the show, and have been adapted as is fitting for the story.  Clearly, I’m so used to canon series that my Inner Shipper prods me without my even realising it, and this is the result; after all, it’s bloody ridiculous to do fanfic for something that doesn’t even have a plot, and I don’t want to enter the realm of real-person fic because it’s wrong on far too many levels.  Nope, basing fictional characters on them is easier.

I’ll just shut up before I dig myself into an even bigger hole, and get on with it.

Come Forward

The players:

Yvelyn Meadows, 32, an investigative television presenter on “Spirit Watch” (previously “Ghost Watch”), also its executive producer, and originator of the initial idea.  Open-minded and harbours a belief in the paranormal after the things she’s experienced (though still a tad sceptical), but still nervous of location shooting overnight – especially on her own – even though she’s getting better after three years.

Mark Rackham, 36, her husband, and the show’s producer and director.  Mainly stays behind-the-scenes or operating one of the cameras.  Open-minded but also sceptical and level-headed.

Alec Jesuda, 45, spiritualist medium on the show, and now a close friend of Yvelyn and Mark after three years working with them.  His spirit guide is Tom, a young boy from the 1700s.

Wendy Jesuda, 40, his wife, also a psychic herself.  She is Alec’s support and anchor during the show and on the rare occasions when he is possessed.

Dr. Thomas Fortune, 47, the researcher and historian for the show, also good friends with the previous four.  Open-minded and excitable, and enthusiastic about his work.

Dr. Robert Carpenter, 39, the resident sceptic and voice of logic, who examines the footage post-production and analyses it.  Is willing to believe if given irrefutable evidence, even though he manages to refute everything he sees.

Fred Adman, 31, paranormal investigator during location shoots.  He generally prefers to find a logical explanation rather than jumping to conclusions.

Plus an assortment of technical operators on camera and sound in the close-knit team, including Stewart, the easily-frightened minicam operator, Cathi, the makeup girl, and Matt, the sound guy.  Dr. Douglas Brown is a co-presenter for live shows, also a friend of the team.

The plot:

The team visit supposedly haunted locations and investigate them for the television series.  Yvelyn and Alec are both happily married to their respective other halves, and nobody suspects that anything might occur to disrupt the harmony within the team or for either of the couples.  Over the course of the series – and three years of filming together – they all start to form a close friendship; everyone gets closer, but there is obviously implicit trust because of the nature of the work.

Wendy (Alec’s wife) often cannot attend the locations with the team due to psychic priorities/arrangements of her own, so either Yvelyn or Mark end up responsible for his well-being during séances and mediumships.  Eventually, it reaches the stage where only Wendy or Yvelyn is able to pull him out of the trance-like state that happens during possessions, as it seems that theirs are the only voices that can cut through the haze, though none of them, Alec included, is able to explain why.

A strong mental/psychic connection forms between Yvelyn and Alec because of this, a definite, inexplicable energy that neither of them anticipated.  They only feel the ‘pull’ of the connection during Alec’s mediumships and when spirits are apparently present, not at any other time; when they are off-set and off-air, everything is normal.  Their fellow crew-members start to notice the change in their dynamic during filming, and Wendy and Mark also start to realize what’s happening.  Strain in the four-way relationship – mainly because neither Yvelyn nor Alec can really explain what’s going on – begins to affect production of the show.  Wendy makes a point of attending all the locations, but this only seems to make things worse.  Mark is over-protective of Yvelyn to the point that they fall out prior to location shooting, and when Yvelyn gets overly scared during the shoot it is Alec who ends up playing the hero because Mark is nowhere to be found, thus further exacerbating the situation.

It seems that the public are also starting to notice the change; there is speculation on the online message boards.  Mark spends more time fraternizing with the rest of the team – especially their make-up girl, Cathi – so Yvelyn deliberately retorts by, at least partially, acting on the energy between herself and Alec, despite his warning her that nothing good will come of it.  He says he’s very fond of her, but in his view she’s more a surrogate daughter or niece.

During filming of a special live show, everything finally reaches a head during one of Alec’s mediumships.  The live audience at the show itself, as well as millions of viewers nationwide, are witness to the final culmination of that energy.  They cease shooting and go off-air for half an hour while everyone calms down and argues out the personal issues (during which time Dr. Douglas Brown is left to entertain and reassure the crowds) and finally come back on air to apologise, give some kind of explanation, and move on, this time with Mark heading the investigation alongside Alec, whilst Yvelyn disappears to her trailer, where she is visited by Thomas Fortune and chats it out.

After the live shooting has finished, everyone gets some well-earned rest and spend the next morning deciding what they should do.  They establish that the energy which has been developing between Alec and Yvelyn is not their fault, but is partially due to the manner in which they work, because of the close relationships in the team in general, and because Alec himself is so open, as a medium, to outside influences.  The both of them maintain that their relationship, as far as they are consciously concerned, is professional and friendly, nothing more, that their actions happened beyond their conscious control, and that none of it was planned or even anticipated.  Wendy accepts it, Mark is less convinced.  It comes down to two choices: Yvelyn and Alec can act on what’s already there between them and take all the consequences that entails, or they can end the series for good, breaking up the team completely, but saving two marriages in the process…

So, it has a plot, it has inspiration, and I have pretty much all the time in the world to finish it.  All that's left to do is start it.  I also had this little idea for it earlier where Yvelyn receives birthday gifts prior to a shoot - earrings from Mark and flowers from Alec, and is later seen wearing not the earrings, but one of the flowers... possibly.  I was really, really trying not to portray Mark as the bad guy, but it seems to have ended up that way.  No matter how adorable Derek and Yvette are (in RL, I mean), she and Karl are also too lovely for words...

Guh.  Damn you, canon-based series.

Well, if you get that from the summary alone, I dread to think what the story itself'll do to you.

Talking of which, the first chapter is nearly done, so keep an eye on the community for my update-post. I also have a shippy icon coming, too, if LJ cooperates enough to upload it.
