This is kind of odd...

Just before I left work today, I noticed this strange anomaly in Word, but for some reason it's only in my individual files folder on the shared drive, not any of the case files.

(The quality's not that good because it's a BMP, but as you can see, some of the filenames are appearing in blue, for no apparent reason...

All of the files (except about one) in that folder are hidden files, and there's nothing untoward in the properties either.

WEIRD.

In other news, I came home to (a) a leaky binbag dripping fat inside my bin (yeuch) and (b) a surprise through the letter box in the form of Nightmare Revisited (from my mum), a version of the NBC soundtrack with the songs performed by different metal artists, as the Current Music testifies. It's very very strange indeed, but also interesting...

I also saw the perfect present for Paul's birthday but I'm going to look online for cheaper options because it was a rip-off in M&S. I was in there getting a curry for tea, before you ask. ;)

Can't help you with an explanation... but it's weird you should mention this as I've also noticed this over the past couple months on my own computer - a lot of seemingly random files and folders throughout my harddrive (but not my external) have taken to showing up highlighted in blue for no apparent reason.

So, err, if nothing else... it's not just you?

It's very odd indeed... I thought my eyes had gone wrong for a moment.

A little googling (apparently "files and folders showing up blue" is a legitimate search term, go figure) has informed me that the files show up blue because they've been compressed to save space. Apparently, this is applied automatically to rarely-used files and folders... but, since one of my blues ones is the Program Files folder, I don't know what their definition of "rarely-used" is!

[identity profile] teylaminh.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that might explain it, our shared drive is desperately low on space and those files are very old and, yes, "rarely-used".

Same goes for those files in my Personal folder which I haven't accessed in months...

I must say though, the difference between your blues and mine is utterly hilarious. Mine are, like, neon compared to yours. It's like yours are whispering "uhm, excuse me, I'm blue..." and mine are screaming "OHAIBLOO!!!" at the top of their lungs.

[identity profile] teylaminh.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine that's an XP / Vista difference... :) It's my work PC.

[identity profile] thefleshfailure.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh yes, that would explain the bubbly little top-bar on the window of yours. I thought it looked a bit too... err, bubbly.

And, heh, how did I know you'd request a screencap? ;) OHAIBLOO!!!

Heh, they really are blue...

I did have my work PC set up as Win 98 style (they gave us all new machines recently and you can actually change the screensavers and colours for once, har har) but then got confused because my work PC has never looked like that and it just looked wrong. I need a very specific difference between home and work PCs, for obvious reasons. ;)

Yep! See where the whisper versus scream analogy comes from...

HEH. I immediately switched to 98/Classic mode at the very first opportunity with all my old computers, as well - Vista is the first version of Windows I've had and instantly liked to the point of never bothering with the switchover. For that, I blame the shiny... but I can't say I ever had the problem with different PCs having the same basic layout - the ones at the Museum are XP to my Vista, so it's not an issue... but I've always been painfully specific on colour co-ordinating my personal computer (I'm one of those horrible people who spend HOURS making sure every taskbar, window, button &c &c, not to mention Trillian and Winamp all match my desktop wallpaper), and that in itself is usually more than enough of a specific difference from... well, every other computer on the planet, really.

[identity profile] teylaminh.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the menus on classic mode because XP mode is just annoying and I'm generally of the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it rule... But I'm the same with Vista in that I liked it immediately on sight, despite anticipating instant hatred. ;)

I dunno, I think my work PC just has to be simple. We have a specific desktop background which has our PC information on it in case we need to ring the helpdesk, and it's not worth trying to colour coordinate everything, really.

I did spend ages trying to turn WMP an interesting colour, though. :)

[identity profile] thefleshfailure.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I still blame the shiny with Vista - I'd played around with it before on other people's computers, and HATED it... but the second I had it on MINE, it was like "EEESHINY!!". I swear, they put some kind of hypnotic substance in those sodding "you've beaten Mah Jong!" fireworks.

That does make sense, the specific work-related desktop... albeit a boring kind of sense... and the WMP thing amuses me. I cannot even tell you how happy I was when I discovered my current WinAmp skin; it has fifty different pre-set colour themes, and I have yet to find a desktop wallpaper, however elaborate, that I can't find a perfect match for.

...yes, it is the Very Simple Things that keep me entertained...

PS: Screencap!

I had the same thing yesterday, it was affecting my Personal Drive. Somethings were in blue and some black. I wonder if things will be back to normal today.

[identity profile] teylaminh.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Read the comments with [livejournal.com profile] thefleshfailure above - it's a perfectly normal thing, and not likely to return to normal unless the drive they're on is made any bigger. ;)
