first day - the update.
Mar. 8th, 2003 01:42 amseveral things:
1) 6 hour shifts on a friday night, on one's first night, are not particularly pleasant. but i suppose it's better that they go past relatively quickly when it's busy...
2) the cooper's arms is a posh rich-people pub. this is good, because it's not full of yobs. this is also bad, because they order hideously complicated and expensive drinks...
3) pubs (or possibly just this pub) have entirely too many types of glass... and also too many types of drinks. and far too many combinations of said drinks...
4) am subsisting entirely on free coke and random crisps. (and mcdonalds prior to shift beginning. i'll either lose weight from all the running about, or put on more from the crisps. (although i did only have, literally, a crisp tonight. and far too much coke.)
5) getting to the pub isn't a problem, really, except for the hideously far apart bus times (i can get there for 6.00 or 8.00, but not 7.00. frell knows how i get there for 12.00 on sunday, considering the bus doesn't even run that day...) getting back is somewhat more of a problem as said bus ceases to run at about 8.30. which'll teach me to get jobs in the middle of nowhere...
6) as anticipated, i suck at pulling pints. i'm sure it'll get easier. am also covered in all number of beverages ranging from spilt coke, spilt wine, a lot of spilt beer and lager, and probably quite a bit of dishwasher water. yick. this means i'm going to have to learn to do proper laundry. eep.
7) owfeetow. i am never wearing those shoes again. if i could wear trousers, i'd wear my trainers (trousers are long enough to hide them, and they're black anyway) but i can't, so tomorrow i may attempt the long-skirt-and-docs thing, if i can take off/conceal the attached chains. and i'm going to have to get a few more white tops, as my shirt is now disgusting...
8) just for the record: 6 hours @ £4.20ish per hour = £25ish. not bad. at this rate i'll even have money for cats...
and tomorrow i shall sleep til bloody 3pm... although possibly i should go shopping as i've run out of food. oh, joy.
anyway, all that aside (i'm not feeling as cynical as i appear, i'm just bloody knackered) it wasn't as hideous as i anticipated, probably because of the aforementioned lack of yobs. apparently there's a 'quiet period' tomorrow between 6.00 and 6.45, which shouldn't be too bad, although as clive (bar manager type personage) has to lock up i probably won't get home til about 2am because he's giving me a lift back.
so, basically, i may not be around very much lately, and definitely not on friday nights (not that i would be next week anyway, since, well, cats) or saturday nights. will still be around on mondays, more so as of next week because no more 'farscape' :*-( and no, this does not mean that when i'm back in brum i'll get a job at the briar rose and get everyone free drinks :P
in short, i survived, i didn't break anything (was a near hit with one of the saucers; it actually made contact with the floor but remained intact), i didn't lose anything, i think i gave everyone the correct change, and i managed to carry a very heavy tray of drinks up a flight of stairs without dropping it. go me :)
