This also explains why I've seen so much debate on Fail Fandom Anon about the wrongness of people archiving others' fic without permission. I'd always assumed it was a given (and in our fandom, if people HADN'T done that we would have very little fic left, since a lot of the reconstructed sekrit!archive is based on fans having come forward with stuff - their own and others' - which they'd saved to HDs or printed off over the years) that part of fandom was preserving and archiving for the Greater Good.

But we're in a place now where issues of authorship in fanon and in mainstream publishing are meeting at some very weird angles...

As for 50 Shades, the other day a girl opposite me was reading it in the railway station. That was my first 'encounter' with it. I went for lunch with a friend on Saturday and she told me how her law firm is full of staff reading the bloody thing! We couldn't get over the open reading of porn at work, and figured they must be people who feel extraordinary liberation at being able to buy erotica in Tesco, and possibly this book has been their first experience of fiction pandering to their sexual needs.

So on the one hand, shine on you crazy diamonds. On the other... go! Frolic! Gambol in the big wide internet!
