This week, the Alcester Road has been full of really stupid drivers...

On Monday (I think it was Monday, it may well have been yesterday...), some idiot in a van pulled up right next to the bus in a single lane, and subsequently, quite deservedly, lost his wing mirror.

This morning, we had one idiot parked on double yellow lines (in the bus lane), and another idiot driving half inside the bus lane, causing the bus to have to maneouvre around him.

If and/or when I ever learn to drive, I will take this piece of knowledge wherever I go: buses are bigger and uglier than cars. Don't take them on.

If I were to make a scale of bad drivers, I think people who do silly things around buses would come fourth. In third place would be anyone who beeps their horn unnecessarily. Second would be male drivers who beep their horns at women thinking it's flattering. And first would be that horrible breed of bastards who think it's everso amusing to drive through puddles at full speed and drench pedestrians. (I admit, the top two are close runners... but the puddle thing is just evil, and I've been on the receiving end of it twice.)

Bus drivers, incidentally, would come fifth. ;)

We had an email this morning containing the full transcript of Gordon Brown's latest "vision" speech, regarding education; moreover, regarding how to improve it. This is quite refreshing. Whilst the best thing Tony Blair could do was help to blow up innocent civilians, Mr Brown appears to actually have a plan that concerns something important. I may not lose all faith in politics at this rate...

I admit to being something of an Elitist Bitch when it comes to education, but, as I explained to Paul earlier, that's only because the standard of state education is so depressingly poor. You get what you pay for. If, in ten years' time, that standard has improved significantly enough that it closes the gap between state and private education, I might consider sending any children I have to a state school rather than forcing / coercing them to go to a grammar school.

Until then, I shall remain an elitist bitch.

I realise I am something of a hypocrite, given I have a good education and a degree, yet am working in a fairly low-skilled and rubbish job. This is entirely due to my failngs as a person, not the failings of my education. If I wasn't crazy, I would have a better job.

Mind you, to listen to some of the fee earners yesterday, my degree was easy anyway. "You read a book and you write an essay about it; it's not hard", apparently. Okay then - you do an English degree. I think if that comment had been made on Thursday when I was full of PMT, I wouldn't have managed to hold my tongue when I overheard it...

In other news, the PC is still being weird - it took 2.5 reboots yesterday to get it to work and then it kept randomly slowing down. I say 2.5 because the first time I switched it on, it rebooted itself when I wasn't looking, after which it froze...

I did at least manage to get the tickets booked for the November concert, and, assuming there isn't going to be another postal strike, they should be delivered shortly.

There is very little to do at work again and another team's WPO just took the full-tape I was looking forward to killing time with. But at least it'll keep her out of my hair for an hour or so, and I have my PDR this afternoon. They were all meant to be yesterday but the morning sessions were cancelled due to nobody remembering to fill in their forms (um, DUH), and then the afternoon ones were also cancelled because Marie had to attend a Pay & Grading meeting. I don't have any issues or anything, it'll just get me away from my desk for a bit...

I think that's everything.

Heh! My scale of Bad Drivers is rather more generalised than yours:

3. People who beep their horns. For any reason at all, short of a life-threatening emergency.
2. People who break the speed limit (I'll be almost tolerant here and add 'by more than 5mph'). For any reason at all, short of a life-threatening emergency.
1. People who talk on their mobile phone while driving. For any reason at all, including a life-threatening emergency.

Which pretty much narrows it down to 95% of the driving population.

LOL. Yours is more generalised towards public safety than mine, at least...

I maintain that men who beep their horns at women should have said horns wired into their privates so that they receive a similar shock to the people they're beeping at. Then they might bloody well stop it.

Heh. I can't say I've ever witnessed a bloke doing that. Well, possibly once or twice in Manchester on heavy student nights... but not here. Which is odd, really; living in Essex, one would assume it'd be something that happens on a daily basis...

It's happened to me twice... same as with the puddle incident. The second time the bloke was grinning like a moron and waving at me.

Of course, if I were to smash his windows in punishment, it would be me who got in trouble.

Ha, yep! Just like, if I'd inadvertantly decapitated the very small child in Sainsbury's who was zooming all over the place like a gerbil on speed and running out in front of everyone's trolleys, it would've been me who was hit with the lawsuit.

When I worked for Direct Line (car insurance people) I used to get people complaining that their insurance premium had gone up because they had a speeding ticket. Yeah, that's because you're an UNSAFE DRIVER you moron. You should be apologising to the world at large, not complaining to me.

Possibly I would be more sympathetic if I actually drove myself.

I doubt it, actually... you'd still complain about the unsafe drivers, but to their faces. Or at the very least, to their car windshields...
