The Americans are remaking Life on Mars. Rather than leaving it well alone as they should have done.

God save us all. I haven't seen something that awful since reading the original American pilot script for the Jonathan Creek remake. COLM MEANEY?? Chief O'Brien? WTF? Is he playing Gene or Ray? I can't even begin to fathom...

I hope it bombs and they realise the mistake. If it gets as far as a remake of Ashes to Ashes I can only begin to imagine. Ow.

I would find the amount of abuse it's getting at lifein1973 amusing, except that it genuinely is so horrible that it deserves it. *sigh* I can only desperately second your wish that it bombs before it has a chance to really take off.

I can't even fathom how the character of Gene Hunt would effectively translate into a US series... I think his chauvinistic machismo would merely make him a horrible caricature instead of a likeable beast of a DCI... meh.

Precisely. And really, the characters are so rooted in where they're from. Like... Gene is the Manc Lion! He can't be the 'LA Lion,' it just doesn't work.

Precisely! Plus, policing styles are so different over there compared to here, let alone how different they were back in '73...

Maybe the UK should start re-making all those brilliantly successful US shows like Friends (which would be Mates, obviously. :P) or Buffy (where Spike and Giles would be American) and see how THEY like it...
