You may have noticed I am not football's biggest fan. I've watched the first two England matches under duress (I happened to be in the same room when they were on) and today several people at work set up a television in one of the meeting rooms in order to watch the 3.00pm match this afternoon. I understand the score was favourable, thus scuppering my hopes of us LOSING HORRIBLY.

Does that make me unpatriotic? No it bloody doesn't. I frelling hate football. Hate it. There are better ways to show your Englishness than shouting in a lairy fashion at some idiots kicking a ball around.

That being said, this letter in The Metro amused me this morning.

Because honestly, if we can't beat the USA at a game they can't even refer to properly, we are a lost cause. This is a country that takes games we play at school and makes them EASIER (American Football = Rugby with wussy armour; Baseball = Rounders with helpful catchy glove; Basketball = Netball where you can run with the ball. Miss Jackson would eat you alive for that. :P)

I shall now flee before my potentially very unpopular opinion loses me half of my f-list. Buhbye.

At the risk of double-spamming your LJ today...

LOL LOL LOL LOL THAT ARTICLE. (And double LOL your commentary on the American dumbing-down of our sports, 'cause it's SO FREAKING TRUE!).

I'm kind of in a no-lose situation with the world cup -- I'm cheering for us, so if we win, I'm happy... but I'm also kinda quietly mocking all the ridiculous fans who think we actually Stand A Chance at getting somewhere, so when we do ultimately lose I'll be laughing my ass off. I get to enjoy both sides of the humiliation! :D

Also the fact that the American "World Series" only involves America. Because the rest of the world doesn't have any sports, obviously. I've even heard them refer to 'soccer' as "European football". Er... no, that would THE ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD.

I've been trying to show an interest, but meh. It simply bores me. We don't stand a chance at ever winning the World Cup ever again and I simply don't understand what the fuss is about.

LOL, yes. The Americans are so absurd when it comes to their sport; they're so obnoxious in assuming theirs is the definitive... then, when someone points out that we have baseball too, only we reserve it for helpless little girls who aren't grown-up enough to play cricket with the boys, they get all huffy.

We don't stand a chance at ever winning the World Cup ever again and I simply don't understand what the fuss is about.

Honestly, I've just been looking at is as a brilliant excuse to laugh at the deluded people who put up flags everywhere and who genuinely believe we're gonna win it. I suppose it's the real-life equivalent of mocking the no-hope X-Factor wannabes... which is ironic, 'cause I refuse point-blank to actually do that. Sports Fans totally deserve it, though. ;)

I am so with you! We had a big screen put up in the staff room and those of us who follow Wimbledon want to know if we can have the same.

I drew a Slovenian flag on my hand in red marker and blue marker and tippex. I was most disappointed by the score.
