...are here.

Enjoy.
teylaminh: (Christmas - snow)
I slept on the sofa last night. Admittedly it's a sofa which was originally my bed, so it was quite comfortable, but nonetheless, that is where I slept. The reason for this was because Paul has the lurgy (again! Or possibly the same lurgy as a month ago, we're not sure...) and I'd already spent an hour and a half trying to get to sleep against his horrendously loud snoring. Obviously, it's not like he could help it, but it was either sleep on the sofa or suffocate him with a pillow...

At one point I could still bloody well hear him through the wall.

Anyway, despite not getting to sleep until gone 1.00am and waking up at least three times in the night (one of which was due to Paul also waking up and finding me not there, and then coming to find me) I am surprisingly not tired today. I've always said, though, that I cope much better with lack-of-sleep tired than I do mental-exhaustion tired, because at least there's a valid reason for it. There's nothing more annoying than getting enough sleep but still being too knackered to do anything; it's usually the case that a lack of sleep results in uber-productivity in order to stay away - or at least hyperactivity.

I even got up at 7.00 and had a shower this morning as I didn't have time last night, what with choir, ordering food and watching Dead Set - which, by the way, you should ALL be watching, if you're not already - and left the house 10 minutes early just in case the mild smattering of snowfall made the traffic crazy. Thank goodness for half term, though; the buses and roads were empty... But GOOD LORD, it's cold out there.

Speaking of choir, two things to mention: firstly, I am no longer doing the rehearsal on Saturday because there's too much party prep for one person to do, and it also saves us having to rush to get the DVDs on Friday night, as we can get them on Saturday instead. If the attendees want to turn up slightly earlier, they can do, but only by about an hour or so, please. ;) Secondly, my decision to possibly leave after Christmas may well have been a bit rash, and was the culmination of feeling despondent and knackered as a result of said rehearsal being annoying. As I have effectively eradicated that problem, I will probably stay after all. The fact is, when I'm not tired I do enjoy it, and everyone seems to be quite excited about the prospect doing of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius in the summer, so I'm most intrigued as to why...

We were a bit thin on the ground last night, presumably because of the weather - as ever, the slightest bit of snow and Birmingham grinds to a halt. I'm quite glad, actually, that I was going home so late, as waiting for a bus at 5.30 would have been a completely fruitless endeavour...

I think today is going to be quiet. We should definitely be allowed skeleton staff at half term - although I suppose those with Small Children would still get preference. Bah.
teylaminh: (Random - Drag Crossing)
Quite an entertaining weekend, really...

Friday night was spent carving the pumpkin, and in doing so discovering that small pumpkins are very difficult to carve because you can't get your hand inside... and also the, stringy seedy bits are more compacted and impossible to get out.  But anyway, given the size of the thing and the fact that it was Paul's first ever attempt at pumpkin carving, I think between us we did quite well...

Say hello to Mr Pumpkinhead... )

Other than that, uneventful.  We watched The Wicker Man randomly on Sky.

Saturday was spent indulging, as usual, in old repeats of Catchphrase, which are now reaching the final few years of broadcast and depserately trying to come up with original catchphrases, most of which are just nonsensical and quite disturbing...  Anyway, other than that the majority of the afternoon/evening was spent getting ready for going to the Wellington.

My suicide goth outfit changed at the last minute to being a plain black dress, because the original outfit made me look fat no matter what I did.  On the plus side, I was very very impressed with my make-up efforts on Paul, and he turned out looking like a cross between a mime and the Crow.

Doesn't he make a pretty gothboy? )

The white gloves looked amazing in UV light, too.

Wellingtonness was fun, at least.  Vanilla's show was excellent, as usual, Gobby Paul was wearing little horns on his head (they suited him rather too well) and even though the promised rendition of Starlight Express was forgotten ("I must've been pissed...") it was quite entertaining to see the terrified expression on Vanilla's face when we descended on her to demand she still sing it.  :)  There was a fancy dress competition which involved all those in costume doing the time warp on stage.  This was introduced by Vanilla pointing at random becostumed audience people, including me, although her exact words were "Not you, you're just fucking depressing... oh, she knows I'm only joking."  I really, really can't dance, even less so when tipsy and forced to (the Time Warp is my weakness, dammit!) and am now remembering the entire thing with mortified embarrassment.  Vodka = evil.

We also had the line of a song ("I fraternise with people I hate") directed at us...  And we made my mother bob for apples - she nearly drowned in the process and thereby deserved to win, since the bloke who did win cheated.  And won a Rampant Rabbit, which serves him right. ;)  I'm still waiting for her to exact revenge.

There was a very posh, very drunken bloke who got it into his head to do karaoke at one point, even though he hadn't actually put a request in, and also interrupted the start of Vanilla's act until she told him to "sit your arse back down".  After that I think he was evicted from the premises.  He was mad, though... really, really mad.

I think we left at about 1.30am or thereabouts, and discovered the following morning that Paul's phone had gone.  This is not only annoying, but just plain weird, as it was either nicked out of my handbag by a very stupid thief who left behind another phone, a wallet and a purse, or fell out in the taxi (no joy from phoning the taxi firm, alas) or as I got my keys out... and if it's fallen out round my house, it doesn't stand a chance.

So, yes.  Apart from that, quite fun.  Spent Sunday afternoon making biscuits whilst hung over.  Joy.

So, there we go.

This morning I got to work to discover there was a city-wide, presumably just council-wide, power cut.  No phones, no electricity, no nothing.  Unfortunately the clocking in machine was still working so it'll show up my shameful arrival at 10.00am, for which I blame the buses entirely...  So, yeah, that was fun, had nothing to do for an hour, and then the printer refused to function because of 'network connectivity problems'.  Good start to the week.

Things are going to be quite slow, i think.  I'm pretty much only typing for Natasha at the moment since Shafiq rarely gives me anything. Paul Burge has now gone off to New Zealand so we're down to two Chairs, and whilst I could be doing lots of photocopying, I can't because there's a stationery freeze and we have precisely one ream of blue paper.  Hurrah.

Anyway, I need to tidy my room after I've checked my f-list, so I shall sign this one off...
teylaminh: (MH - anime!Snuggle - Y/K)
You'll all be glad to know that what I thought was the start of my PMT on Tuesday turned out to be the end of it.  In which case, the Valerian definitely takes the edge off by generally being more awake. But only just.

Last night I had an extreme allergic reaction to one of Paul's cats, which decided to come and sit on me for a couple of hours.  My cat allergy is a weird thing; instead of sneezing, my left eye just swells up and starts watering like crazy, and itching, so I rub it, so it itches more, etc, etc.  It was still swollen two hours later and this morning it looked like I'd been punched in the eye.  It's still significantly smaller than the right one.  Madness.  I'm hoping it does go away soon.  Stupid allergies; why couldn't I be allergic to something I don't like?

We watched Terry Gillliam's Brazil, which was... very, very strange, with lots of familiar faces. It stars Jonathan Pryce, and there's also Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Robert de Niro, Bob Hoskins, and various others. Jonathan Pryce used to be pretty, which was quite disturbing. I can't even summarise the plot except that it's set in some bizarre 1950s-esque future. Something of a cynical take on buereaucracy, I think.

As a result, I think Pryce is becoming one of my favoured actors. Since De-Lovely, anyway, and his performance of "Blow, Gabriel, Blow!". I'd forgotten until last night when explaining it about the interesting twist at the end, so may have to watch that again very soon...

Anyway, now the brain-mrrgh is over and done with, at least for the time being, I've suddenly realised that it's nearly Hallowe'en!

So now I'm in a rush trying to make an effort, obviously.  I think my decided costume plan for Saturday is to be "suicide goth", and will basically comprise the following: black pinstripe mini-skirt; spider-web/stripey tights; pinstripe corsetty thingumabob; black glittery spirally see-through shirt; big boots.  Also copious gothpaint and hoping to create slit wrists with latex rubber stuff (that I used to try and make a Bajoran nose, back in the day, before I bought a proper one...) and blood red lipstick, if itl'l work.  Going to wash my hair tonight, straighten it tomorrow and then attempt to spiral-curl random sections of it for interest, which'll probably fail horrendously but is worth a try nonetheless.

So tomorrow I have to go to Woolworths to find either black hair dye (for Paul's mime outfit - by the way, we have some white gloves)  or hair spray and possibly some fake blood, even though the city and its dog will also be desperately trying to find Hallowe'eny stuff.

And  now, to get you all in the mood, have some recipes, courtesy of Asda about 6 years ago...  Measurements in metric and imperial, but sadly no cups for you Americans...

Hot Spiced Apple Juice )

Pumpkin Turnovers )

Savoury (Bat) Biscuits )

Apple & Cinnamon Crumble Bars )

There you go.  I fully expect everyone to have made at least one of these by Monday.

Friday, Paul and I will be carving the pumpkin.  And not making pumpkin turnovers, because I have no puff pastry...  Saturday will be spent probably trying to dye his hair.  Sunday is meant to be spent making biscuits, as above.  This should be interesting.

So, yes.  My hair desperately needs a wash, so I'll sign this one off...

While I wait for my fish-and-brocolli pie thing to finish cooking, I require suggestions, please.

Hallow'en beckons.  As most of you know, I'm not having a party, as such, since we're going to descend upon the Wellington in our *ahem* masses, but nevertheless, Hallowe'en is a time for much costumely revelry.

Here's the thing.

This week, I'm dying my hair RED in time for London.

On Monday, I'm hoping to get a pair of the black wings they had in Maskerade, if they've still got them, after I've got my hair cut a bit and straightened and stuff.  I have a witch's hat (well, actually, it's the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter...) and some cat ears and masks and various other random things lying around.  I feel that these Random Things should be put to good use on the 29th, so...

WHAT SHOULD I BE?

I don't have a theme this year, so all suggestions (within reason) will be accepted.  Please comment with suggestions, even if it's just generic "red-haired winged goth chick".  I need ideas, people!

Remember, for those attending my birthday shindig at the Briar Rose on the 15th (3.00pm onwards), if you're dressed recognisably as either Spike or a pirate, you will get a free drink from me. :)

So.  Comment, please!

That was the randomest weekend ever.  No, really.  The randomnity just kept on coming in droves.

LJ-cut into sections, so you can miss out bits if you so desire, as there are also several pictures included.  Lorna's photos can be found here.

Friday
So, I left work at 2.15 in order to get into town and to the station to meet Eni ([livejournal.com profile] thefleshfailure) off her 3.00pm train.  I was standing still waiting for a bus at 3.15, and didn’t have my mobile with me so I couldn’t even text her to tell her I was going to be late, and then I couldn’t actually find her at the station.  But after all that was out of the way, everything was fine.

Pre-party. )

Be Our Guest. )

Bad movies and silliness. )

Saturday

Let the conversion begin! )

And then it just lapsed into the Twilight Zone. )

So, you thought the Farscape crossovers were scary? )

Fangirls )

Finally, at about 3.00am, we decreed it was definitely bedtime, as we were hyper and tipsy.  However, the randomness was not to end there, oh, no.

Sunday

East End Angst. )

Disney Angst )

And after that, I took her back to the station and she headed back to Manchester.  Now I have three CDs to listen to – one off Naomi and two off Eni – as well as a Friends H/C trampoline-based fic to read and review.  And yet more CDs to listen to, as I bought a load more on Tuesday...

So.  That was the Hallowe’en of All Randomness.  Now I just have to finish the London write-up.

So, after a random absence, I returnetheth to your friends lists with random pieces of news:

1) I am quite horrendously addicted to Most Haunted, in case people hadn't guessed that already.
2) I currently have nothing to do at work, but hopefully this'll change soon as a) Liz H should be back soonish and I'll be getting more than one set of minutes per week to type; b) CPAdmins are meant to be doing four meetings a week by instruction of Tina H, and my other job is to distribute them, so that'll give me something else to do and I might even get a chance to listen to music and zone out entirely whilst doing so; and c) if they're cutting back by getting rid of agency workers but are low on minute-takers, I could be working for the BCC on a permanent basis.  Apparently.
3) I'm going out with Ben again tomorrow night; we're going to Ask on Hagley Road, and I'll update on that at some point.  I'm not entirely sure when the transition from 'meeting up outside of work' to 'going out on a regular basis' takes place...
4) I just banged my little toe against the desk and now it hurts.
5) After nearly a full day of frustration, non-functionality, broken wireless aerials, and reinstalling of AOL 9.0, WE FINALLY HAVE BROADBAND AND A HOME NETWORK!  Which means I can finally get online before 10.00pm and me and my mother can both be on at the same time.  Huzzah!
6) In discussion whilst at Asda (where else?), I have been allowed to hold a Hallowe'en party, since it seems [livejournal.com profile] falling_softly may not be able to.  Naturally, I'll email/post full details of this if it takes place nearer the time,  but for now I'll just say that it'll be BYOB and BYOF, I'll remove most of the more expensive/rare ornaments, but please be careful of the others, and the obligatory costume will be literary/movie/TV-themed.  Everyone who reads this is, of course, invited, whether they're in the country or not. ;)  It'll probably be on the Friday (29th, I think) as Hallowe'en itself is a Sunday.

Woo!  Broadband!  Hallowe'en!

teylaminh: (What kind of life have you known?)
well, i went back and made the last ranty entry a me-only one. with any luck, it won't have been read by those concerned, and now i don't wish it to be. although knowing my luck, it probably has been. in any case, i apologise for it, because i wasn't exactly thinking straight...

i still do hold to my original comment, though: i am resigning as a beta, as of now, except for the phantom fic i have yet to do since i've been promising the girl for months that i'd send it back. once that's done, i'm done. no more beta-ing...

anyway. there is a wonderful new series on sky one called "dead like me", about a girl who, in her own words, excels "in not giving a shit", and who dies when she gets hit by a toilet seat that broke up from mir's debris. she becomes a grim reaper. it's very funny and decidedly odd, but if it ever gets to terrestrial, is definitely worth a viewing.

and i have also finally decided on my halloween costume, and, in true me-style, it's going to be impossible to make short of hiring a dress- (or suit-, technically) maker. ah, well. i still have the backup plan if it all goes horribly wrong...

apologies again for last night's entry... to quote xander: "i shouldn't say words..."
teylaminh: (Default)
yes, enter the greebo lady. i finally started modifying the pair of jeans i never wear any more with bits of fur and velvet and corduroy and lace. including big triangular inserts. they should look very cool when they're done, though ;) will take a photo.

saw pirates of the caribbean again today; it gets funnier the second time.

i'm having lots of trouble coming up with a halloween costume. i don't have time to make the sally-the-ragdoll outfit i was meant to be making, what with going back to uni on the 20th, and i'm down to two last resorts (which i won't tell you in case i end up using one of them) - and so, i need suggestions. movie theme. you'd think i'd be able to come up with something...

bear in mind i will only have my own wardrobe, and charity shops at my disposal, even though there are five costume shops in derby - i will only go there if a wig is required, which is very likely.

help! give me suggestions!

and, yes, i already went through all the tim burton movies, and everything winona ryder's been in. ;)

ee!

katie's present just arrived. it rocks!!

it was a big box containing the following:
- a card, containing several voyager trading cards, pictures, and some DS9 ones (of kira, and the odo/kira dance scene from "his way") and the ten dollars she owed me for stripey tights...
- a letter, explaining the contents of the box.
- a wooden name block. reading "norma", of course ;)
- a mix tape of various things I Must Listen To ;)
- the voyager version of the gilligan's island theme tune, with t'eyla minh shoved on the end :D
- a box of real american cookies. and i heated them in the microwave and they are the most divine cookies i have ever tasted... oh, and she printed a picture of d'argo to put on the front that says "i baked them myself!" (reference to the cookie monster fic...) but seriously. these cookies are wonderful. i'm going to get her to send me more... britain simply cannot do cookies...
- many many carrier bags. american ones. and it turns out walmart is exactly the same as asda, right down to the roll back logo...

so yay!

and the party wasn't nearly as drunken as last year. the quote of the night, which'll also be a caption on one of the photos, HAS to be this, from naomi: "i'm drunk and i'm not wearing my costume go awaaaaaaay..." as she fell on top of me...

this is why we do not feed naomi alcohol. ever.

but it was a fun night. balloon wars and popcorn fights! hurrah! and sarra looked like bustopher jones :)
teylaminh: (Default)
my costume is nearly completed, friends...

i have the shirt, minus sleeves.

i have the coat

i have the hat (yay hat!)

naomi has the boots which i shall borrow.

and all that remains is the making of the skirt and the cutting up of strange leatherette fabric to make a belt...

hurrah for dressing up for halloween! (by the way, if i start singing 'on my own' tomorrow night, someone please stop me... i don't want to be that in character :P)

and i forgot to mention that i watched 'roman holiday' yesterday (or did i? i don't remember... don't think i mentioned it...) and it was a very good film indeed. audrey hepburn as a british princess circa 1953 was incredibly odd as she looked like she should have been russian. anastasia, or something. but anyway, it was all very amusing.

i'm dreading watching 'sabrina fair' and 'paris when it sizzles', for fear that i won't be able to stop sniggering, seeing as they've both got william holden in them. and as if that wasn't bad enough, gregory peck's character in 'roman holiday' was called joe... *rolls eyes*

one day i'm going to learn to control the Muses. one day...

anyway, that's about it. i came online to ask naomi if i'm still supposed to arrive randomly at 3 tomorrow but she's not online, so... i'll be going away again now. ;)
teylaminh: (Default)
right, i know it's a long way off, but i need y'all's help on deciding what to wear for halloween. literary theme (specified as comics/books). my choices are, considering what clothes i have available and what i could possibly buy low-budget...

option one - using a dress of my mothers that is psychedelic but the right style - juliet from... well, gee, that's a tough one...

option two - using my mother's coat, a beret, and buying a man's shirt and something from which to make a cheap skirt - eponine from "les miserables" (although i'll resemble the musicals version because it's easier.) this is the easiest one and also the most comfortable...

option three - for no other reason than i have a black and white tiger-striped coat - cruella de vil... although technically it should be dalmatian...

option four - using the infamous leavers' ball dress (which is actually too big) - something appropriately medieval and/or victorian whereby i will come up with a character later...

option five - using... something - a fairytale princess, but i'm not sure which one yet.

so, those are my choices. i'm leaning towards eponine... but anybody else's ideas/choices would be accepted, please :)

ugh...

halloween spirit?

frell that.

i was going to go out like last year. i was completely psyched to do so. but then i realised i was actually quite comfortable here. if dee had called before six o clock, then possibly, i would have gone out. but she has not yet called. and i can't be bothered.

i'm caught in this bizarre paradox now...

/ - i want to wear my witchy outfit again (albeit a different dress)
\ - i can't be arsed to get all dressed up again, do the makeup, etc...

/ - i like halloween and have made this fact increasingly obvious all day
\ - it's frelling freezing out there!

/ - i have bought a broom especially for the occasion
\ - it only cost me a quid and it will keep til next year

/ - i feel incredibly antisocial
\ - i am incredibly antisocial

/ - i half-promised i'd go
\ - i didn't completely promise. besides, we didn't actually organise it properly.

i have unplugged the phone, not bothered with chorus tonight pretending to be out for halloween stuff, and settled down with my favourite fanfic archive. happy frelling halloween...

my entire upper body feels like it's fallen into my stomach and i hate it when that happens... grrr. hormones. hormones bad... :(
