Bloody 'ell...
Jun. 15th, 2004 04:22 amSee, this is why I shouldn't re-read all my old fic at ridiculous hours of the morning.
Voyager, this time. After randomly reading some on fanfic.net for a change of pace (and because none of the good Spuffy fics've been updated in aeons) I thought I'd go through my own and see how horrible it was, and found it wasn't as horrible as I thought. I mean, it's not exactly great literature, but the characterisation's not too bad, considering. Anyway, on my site I've also got a couple of bits of Katie's hosted, too, because they fit into our 'season 8' and some of them link to pieces of my own. There are three pieces that attempted to 'fix' the finale for Janeway/Chakotay and the Doctor/Seven of Nine, with Admiral Janeway basically giving random advice to Chakotay and Seven to make them reconsider.
Look, the Chakotay/Seven pairing was Wrong, Bad and Heinous, and at that point we'd try anything to remain sane. You have no idea how much I had to scrub my brain after that one. :P
So, anyway, Katie was (and probably still is) one of the very few Janeway/Q shippers. I could never see it, mainly because I was adamantly J/C-orientated and really only considered the J/Q dynamic as one of aggravation and an unrequited crush (though I must say, he's nothing if not persistent...) She spent many an hour trying to convince me of the J/Q thing being more than that, and I was having none of it.
And now, suddenly, reading her little J/Q interlude for the "Endgame" fix, I realised what she was getting at. As a shipper, my views have matured so much over the years, through the various pairings I've followed - John/Aeryn, Spuffy, Norma/Joe; they've all been defining and mind-expanding. So, even though J/Q would certainly take some getting used to, at least I can say that I finally understand where she was coming from...

J/C was wonderful. Why the hell did they introduce the weird 7-o-9 thing? Don't get me wrong, I loved her, but I'd been waiting fricking years for J/C to get together. They were obviously in love. Remember that episode where they were trapped on a planet together? *weep*

Date: 2004-06-15 07:16 am (UTC)J/C was wonderful, and so was D/7. Nobody's ever forgiven them for the C/7 thing (though there are, I believe, actually shippers for them...) And I was just waiting to see how they'd handle J/C ever resolving any of that wonderful sexual tension, knowing that it would have to be Chakotay that made the first move... I wasn't waiting to see if they would. I knew they would.
Feh. Bastards. At least in DS9 they followed their damned character development consistently. Also, I know the exact episode you're referring to. It was 'Resolutions', Season 2, and it was the very first episode I saw, so naturally, I was a goner. It also took me another three years to get it on video because I kept missing it and never being able to find the episode anywhere. I think it remains (along with 'Coda', where she dies) one of my all-time favourite episodes.
Wow, I need to watch Voyager again. Another series to add to the DVDs-to-buy list...
Sorry, I rambled. :)

Date: 2004-06-15 09:05 am (UTC)Yup, DS9 was good on the whole. I didn't like the whole prophets business - it detracted from the other stuff, I felt - but I think it had the most interesting characters of the whole Star Trek shebang. Probably cos it was a bit darker and I like that. Plus great relationships! I loved Dax (but not her whiny replacement, pfft), and Dax/Worf were so great. Violent sex!! So funny. Kira/Odo were marvellous (although did anyone else ever get Kira/Gul Dukat vibes? He blatantly fancied her, despite despising her race). Quark obviously rocked, and I loved his interactions with Odo (but I would never, ever ship that. Ugh). In fact, the most boring person was Sisko... And blimmin' Dr Bashir.

Date: 2004-06-15 09:42 am (UTC)Don't get me started on Dax/Worf. Just don't get me started. I was Dax/Bashir all the way. :) Though D/W were rather amusing, I'll admit, and it did lead to lots of D/B-related angst, so that was okay. But nevertheless, grr. Kira/Odo were the BEST. Plus, they left the entire series open for a sequel, and they've been promising/implying a DS9 movie for absolutely ages, so with any luck, one day they'll get reunited.
As to the Kira/Dukat - yes, but v. disturbing... besides which, wasn't his daughter half-Bajoran? And didn't he sleep with Kira's mother, or did I imagine that?
Garak/Bashir was the most obvious canon-but-not-really-canon-honest-guv slash pairing in any show ever, and they even play it up something wonderful at conventions. Also, I will defend Bashir to the death, but I love the underdogs, and I have to because I met him and he's lovely...
I want DS9 repeats. No more bloody TNG, thank you. Also, Enterprise is the suckiest thing ever. It would maybe be slightly more entertaining if they gave Dean Stockwell a cameo, but they're not that clever...

"...all the way..."
Woo!
Yup, he did have a Bajoran daughter. I think they tried to play up the whole Cardassian/Nazi thing so it was a bit like him having a half-Jewish daughter... He hated it and loved her, if you get what I mean. I don't know about the Kira-mum sex though... I really liked Dukat. Very good character. We needed more villains like him in Star Trek - he actually had depth and layers, and was really quite charming as well as being semi-evil.

Date: 2004-06-15 10:54 am (UTC)DS9 was a lot like Farscape in several ways - the character development/interactions, for one, and the ongoing war arc, and the multi-layered villains (Dukat's a lot like Scorpius.) I mean, I love Voyager, but more for fun, light entertainment. It was never on a par with DS9 for angst or plot... I asked Naomi about the Kira's mother thing, and her reply was this: "gawd. i can't remember. they definitely had the big flirtatious political cunning wossname going on..."
So it's entirely possible. I shall have to buy the DVDs or dig out my old season 6 and 7 tapes...
