Here is a smoothie recipe that I created on Sunday. I need to write them down somewhere and at least my LJ won't get covered in grease like everything else in the kitchen...

Ingredients
2x apples (I used braeburn)
1x pear
2x large dollops of natural yogurt
About 1/2 a cup of apple & mango juice (mine was from Asda)

Method

(Warning: requires smoothie maker)

Peel and slice apples and pear and place into smoothie maker with other ingredients. Turn to mush. Serve.

Not exactly complicated, though it took me several attempts and adding various liquidy things to make it work. A bit foamy but tasted lovely. It needs a name, though.

I also have a punnet of cranberries and blueberries in the fridge to use... ooh, and clementines. Orange & Cranberry surprise, I think. And there's that mixed grape juice in the fridge. Yum. More experimentation tonight, I think...

Today there is an Away Day for Legal Services, so we have a skeleton staff base of the WPOs, secretaries, clericals and a few random fee earners (in here, we have one Legal Assistant and one Senior Solicitor). It's going to be a very quiet day. So obviously, I'm writing an LJ entry.

This weekend was quite hectic, but enjoyable. On Friday night, we had the usual fare of television... though unfortunately, thanks to Channel Four not bothering to compete with Children in Need last week, the UK are now a full two weeks behind the US with regards to Ugly Betty, rather than one week. Whilst this is still better than being months behind, it does make the spoiler temptation rather worse, as there are (admittedly hidden beneath LJ-cuts) discussion entries over on [livejournal.com profile] daniel_betty which are impossible to avoid, and besides that, the episode summaries (and titles, more often than not) give away more than they should...

But anyway, it's all good. Also, Thursday night's Boosh was bloody brilliant, but I've always liked Inner Space and the "You shall not pass!" made me giggle. Also, I'm quite terrified by how much a bit of makeup and a beehive haircut can make Noel Fielding look like Amy Winehouse... (And I'm still totally crushing Noel Fielding; as ever, it's a cheekbone thing. Or a generalised angular face thing.)

Also on Friday I made the nicest lasagne ever. I made the bolognese sauce, and the white sauce was from a jar (need to learn to make it), and put in a layer of cheesy brocolli, and WOW. My Secret IngredientTM really makes all the difference. YUM.

So, anyway, weekend.

On Saturday morning, my mum and David brought over our 'new' oven (by which I mean, their old one). Paul then had to go out and buy a set of pliers, because the cable was bolted to our old one, leading us to further suspect it to be as old as the previous boiler, if not older... Anyway, other than that it was quite straightforward, it works fine, and David also sealed our kitchen sink at the back, so hopefully that'll stop it leaking...

The rest of the day was spent getting veg and meat and picking up my prescription from Boots, which I'd dropped off on Friday. Possibly TMI. )

The rest of the day was spent tidying, hoovering and dusting in preparation for Jen and Dave coming over for dinner on Sunday, and also rearranging the kitchen appliances a little bit to try and make more room. Not sure if it worked, but anyway, it looks a bit better, and at least the breadbin won't get covered in washing-up water all the time.

On Sunday morning Paul nearly set fire to the hob by turning on the wrong hotplate whilst the cover was still on... The covers are new, unfortunately, and one of them is now an interesting shade of dark grey. Bah.

After Paul had done the washing up I set about making a batch of (Irish) Yorkshire puddings (secret family recipe...), as we've run out. Unfortunately, I'd mixed the batter before I realised I'd run out of suet, so had to send Paul out to Sainsbury's for some more... and then I didn't put enough milk in the mixture anyway, so they were a bit dry...

Jen and Dave (and Lisa) arrived at about 3.30, bearing Christmas gifts and a wedding invitation, and we had a very nice dinner at 4.00 of roast pork with all the trimmings, followed by a home-made apple crumble made by Lisa. The rest of the evening was then spent playing Pictionary and Zobmongo, a strange "would you rather" game involving predicting what your team-mates would say... Most bizarre. Jen won both games, incidentally... I think it's a fix. :P

After they'd gone at about 10.00pm, I read through Paul's work report thing and inserted appropriate commas (his colleague needs some report-writing lessons, by the looks of things, not to mention some grammar skills) and then we went to bed.

All in all, quite an enjoyable, if tiring, weekend. Next weekend I really need to start thinking about sorting out Christmas, given it's only a couple of weeks until the Messiah and carol concerts (my voice is almost back to normal, thankfully) and then the day itself will be upon us. Meh. Being off sick the other week completely threw me off kilter. I will attempt Christmas cards again this week, possibly after I've tried to buy a craft knife... I got some PVA glue, so that's a start.

Today has mostly been about:

...finishing other people's work...
...running out of my own work...
...writing bits of Buffy fic...
...& getting rained on...

I left at 4.30, but due to having to go to Tesco and Superdrug for various bits of shopping I didn't get back until 5.30, which was also accounted for by the fact I had to limp from leaving work onwards due to a random pain in my ankle.  My shoes don't appear to have rubbed me, so I don't know if it was a stone or something.  I've had the shoes for months without them rubbing.  Most odd.

I have cooked a bolognese sauce completely from scratch, but can't eat it until after swimming.  [livejournal.com profile] herringprincess is coming over before we go to the leisure centre to deposit MEAT left over from her barbecue.  Mmmm, meat.

Bolognese recipe )

Et voila!

The bit I tried earlier was very nice.  We've run out of ketchup otherwise that would have made it a lot more tangy, I think, but it's quite a success given it's my first attempt.  Since Lisa's mushroom concoction the other week I thought I'd chop them up as small as the onions in the blender, and the entire thing smelled gorgeous...  It's now covered with some foil on the hob for when I get back.

Aaanyway, I should now sign this off. :)

Edit, 22.23: Mmmmm, bolognese. :D I seem to have perfected the "throw things in and hope" way of cooking to a fine art.

The cakes are in the oven.  There are two 18" tins and three small pie tins in there as I'm making three baby cakes to go with the main one for Alison.  When I've had tea (Sainsbury's instant curry) and the cakes are cool I'll make the icing, although I created the uber-lemon flavour last time by accident.  I'll just keep adding lime until it works, I suppose.

In the meantime, here is a photograph of the parfait.  I've taken the strawberries off again and wrapped it in foil for the meantime, in order to transport it to the party... although I think I need a cool bag or something in case it tries to melt.  We'll see.

YUMS )

I need to set the video for Ugly Betty and try and watch the DVD I rented last week... it's a film made entirely using marionettes.  And no, it's not Team America. :P

Edit, 21.13: Cakes are iced as iced can be. Please confirm, cooks on my friends list: it is, in fact, impossible to do anything with icing sugar without covering the entire kitchen with it...

Hmm...

Possibly, my idea of getting both the parfait and the cake done tonight was a tad ambitious.

It's taken me an hour and five eggs to get the meringues right.  Previously, my meringues were made from 1 egg white + 9oz icing sugar, whisked together, spooned onto a plate and put in the microwave for 30 seconds (courtesy of someone on Ready Steady Cook), and hence I've never tried to make proper take-an-hour-in-the-oven meringues.

They are simple enough - unless you're me.  Put two egg whites into a bowl, whisk until 'stiff', add 100g of caster sugar and whisk some more, then spoon onto a greased baking tray and bake for 1 hour at 130o.

The first attempt went wrong because I didn't whisk the eggs long enough so they were all runny, and would have resulted in flat meringues.  The second attempt resulted in some stray egg yolk ending up in the bowl because I seem to have forgotten how to crack eggs again.  Finally, after looking in my good ol' fashioned Marguerite Patten cook book to learn what 'stiff' meant in terms of eggs ("so stiff that you can turn the bowl upside down" may have been overstating it a tad, but it gave me the right idea), I managed to whisk the eggs long enough and make something resembling three-dimensional meringues.

I am now grilling a burger and some hash browns for my dinner, as I can't cook anything in the oven.  I should've got something instant and microwaveable for tea, really.  Or McDonalds or something.

Anyway.  About 40 minutes left on the meringues and then I can do the fun bit with blitzing strawberries in the mixer.  Yaaaay, fruit carnage. :D

This is one of those annoying weeks where I don't have enough days to do everything...

Tonight I should probably stay late (as in until 5.15) rather than leaving early to make up for the hours lost at the team lunch yesterday. (Pizza Express do very nice lasagne.) Except technically I can't, because I need to eat before going swimming I need to be back fairly early in order to cook. I'll just have to leave on time on Thursday and do all my cooking then...

So, tomorrow I need to: bake & ice Lemon Cake, and make meringues for the parfait. And then on Friday I'll make the parfait, as the only thing I need to do to that once it's made is freeze it...

I also have to get something else to go with Alison's present, which I'm going to try and do this lunchtime.

Money moan )

Anyway. It doesn't help that this month I've bought a lot of stuff from Argos, probably about £40-worth of house things. Next month I'm going to try not to spend any money at all except for the allocated £20 a week. It CAN'T be that difficult.

In other news, I got absolutely soaked last night walking the 10 minute walk from work to choir. Annoyingly enough, if I'd left 15 minutes later I would have been fine. Also, when the rain started up again at 8.00, we were all trying to sing over the racket and failing. The room where we rehearse has a flat roof and large skylights, so I'm sure you can imagine the noise...

My work shoes were still damp this morning. Also I forgot to put the washing machine on before I left. Bugger.

Only one work annoyance today: my typing has been pretty much left alone this week because one WPO's dictation machine isn't working (and subsequently her help was more of a hindrance because it took her so long), but as soon as I went out for my lunch this afternoon - with only about 7 things left in the tray, it should be noted, and only three of those from today - two of them were taken. Bah.

During lunch I bought Part Two of Alison's present, which she technically already knows about, a new purse / wallet / whatever for myself, and some shoes from Priceless Shoes as it's closing down. They're patent black slight-wedge-heeled creations with a criss-crossing pattern, so I'm hoping to wear them with skirts rather than my boots now it's getting warmer. Slightly tacky, but hopefully smart enough for it not to notice as they're a fairly classic shape.

I'm going to investigate the Priceless Shoes in Kings Heath on the way home; they've had bags of various sizes in the window for ages, including a rather lovely turquoise one. They are now on sale and I can't see the turquoise one any more, but I spotted a nice dark green one in town earlier that I might get instead. Admittedly they were only a tenner to start with, but I think I can stretch to their reduced price of six quid. My current work bag is ugly and the suede covering is peeling off.. shame, really.

Aaaanyway. I must now sign this off and get back to doing some work.

(PS: At some point I may have to write an Ugly Betty fic. Watch this space.)

No, really. Last night we had our first ever "proper" roast Sunday lunch. The butcher was selling two trays of joints for £10 so we got two little beef joints and two huge pork joints, and had one of the beef ones last night. It was a bit tough, but for £2.50 one can hardly complain...

We also had to cobble together a vegetarian dinner on Saturday night for [livejournal.com profile] herringprincess and [livejournal.com profile] wrysprygoat, as we discovered that pesto wasn't, in fact, vegetarian. Go figure. In the end Paul went out scavenging for Quorn sausages, which we minced and turned into a curry. It tasted all right, and the night was saved... We also watched Donnie Darko, which I'd forgotten was so brilliant... Still confusing.

We were also up ridiculously early on Saturday morning to see a man about a bank loan but at least we got all the shopping done by 12.00. We got 23 different incense sticks from the indoor market (mmm), plus some completely black tealights. We also got an African Violet from Sainsbury's (I am somewhat fascinated by naturally blue plants...) but it needs a bigger pot...

So, quiet a productive weekend.

Just because, have a couple of recipes:

Red Pesto Almost-Mashed Potatoes )

'Almost-mashed' because the outsides tend to go very fluffy and the skins often fall off. It can alternatively be done by peeling first if you don't like skins.

This next one is just because I managed to make the perfect Sunday lunch yesterday and I want to share the joy... Maybe any potential students on my f-list might appreciate it...

Beef Sunday Dinner )

It's all about the timing... Not so much a recipe as a method, but I hope it's useful, in any case...

Oh, yes, and on Friday we taxied to Star City to have a meal and ended up at That Mexican Place, which does really bloody nice food...

That's it, I think. Sorry it's a bit shambolic, but I've been typing this off and on all morning...
teylaminh: (Farscape - Stark - hidden talents)
Last night I made possibly the healthiest meal in a while, though that was rather negated by the sheer amount of it.

Pesto chicken pasta )

I also did this with home-made garlic bread (yes, I am a kitchen goddess) and it was lovely. There was rather a lot of it, so I had the rest for my lunch today... The only bad thing was that the yoghurt overpowered the pesto flavour a little bit, so I might try it with double cream next time (just to make it slightly less healthy...)

Tonight I'm leaving work at about 5.30 to go to a rehearsal for the City of Birmingham Choir (if I can find the bloody place), in the hope of auditioning next week. Christmas just isn't Christmas without a good sing-song, so I'm biting the bullet and trying to join up. Here's hoping my soprano hasn't withered and died. Wish me luck!

Didn't get the job, according to a letter yesterday. At least they didn't leave me hanging around waiting for four weeks this time. I'm a little disappointed, but since I honestly didn't expect to even get this far, not that much. I'm still holding out on the other Audio Typist job in Chief Exec's, which, assuming they didn't lie on their job description, I feel I'm more suited for... here's hoping. Failing that, I'll just keep looking. In any case, I have to get out of here.

Yesterday, Sandra decided to start abusing my help first thing in the morning because she had an 'urgent' piece of work to finish. Cynthia was on duty and out of the office doing photocopying, but nevertheless, considering it was a query that took 5 seconds she could have dealt with it herself. Later on, I got a bag of crisps out of my bag, looked up, and saw her just turning back to her monitor with a filthy look on her face, as if she'd just trodden in some dog poo. Paul thinks I'm just being paranoid; maybe I am, but Sandra's made me paranoid, and that's just as bad.

In other news, I have definitely been playing far too much ItBox recently. This morning I went to press my screen to click the 'OK' button...

And Now For Something Completely Different

Here's a recipe for you. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] metalmikey666 might like it for his website? Suitable for veggies, stodgy, fairly healthy, and very filling. It's also good for any parents having trouble getting kids to eat their greens.

Cheesey Broccauli Mash )

It's very, very tasty, though can be quite sickly if there's lots of cheese in it. The cheese makes it all stick together and the parmesan adds a nice tang to it. My mum's used it as a topping over salmon/whitefish in a pie, which is also very nice. I keep meaning to try adding other things like garlic powder or herbs, but if anyone tries it and makes something delicious and interesting, let me know. I also keep meaning to mix it with mashed potato for the contrast in textures, so ditto for that...

Yay, on flex leave tomorrow and annual leave on Monday. Tomorrow I will do such wonderful tasks as tidying up, cleaning, hoovering, washing and attempting to pack. I also need to write a cheque for Trevor-the-Landlord and put my bank address on the direct debit form.

On Saturday morning the washing machine is being delivered so we need to be there between 9.30 and 12.00 to await the delivery men.

I feel all growed up. :)

Anyway, only four more hours of today to get through, at least...
