okay, this scares me: [livejournal.com profile] britishisles - it's a community for people who want to be british or move to britain.

i can't help but think... why?

trust me, people. it sucks here.

(although, then again, i'm pretty sure if i ever did move to america, i'd miss fish and chips, and traditional english beaches [they are the only place in the world with that distinctive smell...] and eastenders [*ducks*] and british comedy...)

but then, that's what i have you lot for, right? ;)

I'm slightly horrified, but it shows how much they really know about us. Anyway, if any of them moved over they wouldn't be able to afford anywhere to live, there's no huge amount of jobs etc etc.

well, precisely...

i love the fact they want to 'explore' us, like a 3 day trip. they seem to think you can visit every single part of britain in a day...

and of course, they all think we know the queen... makes you wonder if they think they'll be invited for tea parties at buck house once they're over here ;)

although i shouldn't complain. most of the americans i know are lovely...

although saying that, my uncle and my aunt and my grandparents have been invited to several of the queen's tea parties. All the americans I know are lovely, but plenty of them are so naive. It ust amuses me, like the grass must be greener on the other side on the pond.

oh, definitely.

plenty of them when i first met them said "you're from england! coool! i wanna go there!" to which i replied, "trust me, you really don't..."

i've promised to swap countries with at least 5 people, too.

i remember reading a buffy fic ages ago, where buffy and willow visited giles in england and he took them to harrods. buffy was really excited by the prices of everything until he converted it to dollars for her, and then she was horrified ;)

and i just get very amused by them always complaining about the price of hot topic, when it's actually quite cheap in british terms. although i can guarantee if hot topic ever expanded internationally, it would instantly triple in price the moment it got to england...

there's no excuse for silly prices.

there's no excuse for university fees, either, but it doesn't stop them...

wrong rant, sorry ;)

so you're going to vote conservative?

I'm planning on escaping to Scotland to avoid the fees as much as possible.

i don't vote, on the basis i have no political opinion other than "politics sucks" and when everyone's content to vote for bloody labour again, i fail to see how my vote can make a difference...

but apparently the lib dems were the ones who managed to abolish the fees in scotland, so i'd probably vote for them, if i voted. they've been propaganda-ing the halls in derby :)

I would say vote, if your vote really doesn't matter then you might as well spend a few minutes of your time saying who you dislike the least.

But women died to give you the right to vote... that's my reason for voting anyway, amongst others, despite what i think about politics.

Re:

From: [identity profile] teylaminh.livejournal.com
yes, but i fail to see the point in voting when my vote will make no difference whatsoever... last year, everyone still believed all the 'promises' that labour made, and now, look - we have university fees, the possibility of more sodding university fees, graduates with more debt than ever, and tony blair being hypocritical and jeopardising the grammar/grant-maintained schools by threatening to take that grant away, when his own son goes to one...

(which is precisely the reason i'm not political. i'm not interested in a bunch of grown men - adults, whatever - weaving complex webs of lies and not delivering their promises, or having intellectual arguments with each other.)

i'm all for women's rights - and i do appreciate that it took a fight to get the right to vote - but this is 2003, and it doesn't apply now.

i've never voted, and i never intend to, and that's my prerogative. (and i don't feel like getting into a political argument when, as stated, i have no political opinion.)

It's ok, if you didn't have an opinion you'd have people walking all over you, and you wouldn't be Minh, and then where would we be? :) (Clue: the word begins with "l" and ends with "t" and has an "o" and "s" in it ;)) I've just given up argueing, saying "okay" is just so much easier :) it's an "okay, you believe different to me, but thats fine, we can live with that, the world would be a boring place if everyone agreed on everything" :)

hehe. maybe i should start answering like that, too...

see, i respect other people's opinions. just that sometimes, people are... well, wrong. (in your case, i was agreeing, just vocally...) and when they're obviously wrong, or if they're just ignorant, i can't help myself. i have to correct them in a ranty way.

the only drawback is that i always think i'm right, and i end up in arguments with other people who always think they're right, too. that's why i try to avoid arguing with lloyd and naomi... (especially naomi, because odds are she's usually righter than me...)

I think it's great you have that level of confidence in yourself. Personally, I tend to back down when the other person starts talking in a particulat tone, indicating they really believe they're right, (this normally happens when discussing something that is fact, eg: the difference between our term dates and normal students term dates) because I don't have faith in myself that I'm right. (As it turned out, several times I was right, but thats kinda irrelevent after the conversation)

Re:

yeah, but then, even if you do back down and discover later that you're right, you can feel all smug, because you knew you were right all along... ;)

it's not actually so great thinking i'm right. about 50% of the time, it turns out i'm not, and then i look like an idiot...

(and i'm not online 'cause i'm meant to be doing work, but instead i'm still compiling that list of my entire CD collection's track lists...)

well, one can dream :)

me and my boyfriend were discussing (in the shower) about how none of the money we have is real. The paper we hand around is just pretty IOUs and when money is in the bank it is only computer figures.

Pet peeve time again...

If everyone who doesn't particularly want bloody labour to win again doesn't vote for anyone because their vote won't make a difference, what chance is there of bloody Labour not winning again?
